I think it might be a bennefit for me to plant a few acres of corn on my 25 acre hay field. I was thinking about 4 or 5 acres.
I paid $700 to fill the gravity box for the corn stove.
Might be a good reason to find some fast hitch stuff or maybe some stuff for the Farmall H.

I do have the plow, disk and drags. Dont have any corn stuff.
I was thinking, 2 row planter, cultivator- H or fast hitch, one or 2 row picker and a sheller.

Looking for some suggestions.

Just a couple thoughts.

We farmers are planting a _lot_ of corn up here in Minnesota - well if the temp ever gets above freezing.....

How much is hay going to be worth when the 'forgotten crop' is in demand, and the horse owners suddenly find there usual suppliers only grew 2/3 the hay - rest went into corn?

I think you might make up that $1000 and then some on your 5 acres of good hay ground. I have a barn full of small squares, I don't think I will haul any out for $2 a bale right now. See what next year brings on hay price.....

Now, if it's just cool to own a planter & grow some corn, nothing wrong with that. :)

Then, how do you harvest it, and how do you get the moisture down to less than 15%? That is _the_ killer deal with corn - how to harvest it?

Buy this time next year people will be begging for $3.50 corn. Corn is going to go down. Why you ask? How many farmers have planted less corn than last year? Talk about shootting yourself in the foot.We had a chance to make some money and we blew it. If it was 5% less acres in corn insted of 15% more acres.Than maybe we could of had 2 years with a high corn market. It's all about supply and demand. How large will the demand be for 90.5 million acres of corn. They can only make so many gallons of Ethanol. There was plenty of corn last year.So what did we do?12 million more acres in corn. That is a good move. You guys should quite farming and be rocket scientists. With 20% less acres in soybeans this year, I think I'll plant soybeans.

JT, you have very little understanding of the dynamics driving the markets right now.

Boy JT sounds like hes a step ahead of all of us "rocket scientist" farmers. I guess he takes a good long look at the futures markets everyday and becomes smarter than the rest of us. Maybe he can explain why NOV beans have been declineing in the last few weeks. Corn has rebounded to with in .20 of contract highs. Time will tell, I can contract a much higher profit in corn right now that I can with beans.

trying this again. are there any farmers in your area that would let you walk fields to pickup ears laying on ground after harvest is done? could make it into family outing.

Thats enough for the whole winter for me at the rate we use it. I figure next winter the corn will be $4 plus so might cost $1000 or more for the corn.

Buy it now and store it in your wagon. By the time you plant and harvest that few acres $3.50 a bushel will look cheap.
