Trailer Winch Size Recommendation

I'm having trouble deciding what size winch I should put on my Iron hauler. I don't need help deciding which brand, the capacity is more important to me. I want something that can drag a mid-sized (JD A sized or so) tractor with four flat-tires. I suspect this will be about the most strenuous work my winch will have to do. I plan on using a snatch block pulley when needed, so I might not need as big of winch as a single-line puller would want. Thanks for the help.

I know that some people don't care for Harbor Freight stuff, but I bought a 10,000 lb winch like the one above from them 2 years ago.

It is mounted it on my 14,000 lb trailer, and we use ot a lot.

We did add an extra 20 ft of cord to the remote hand control, for a total length of 32 ft.

With this extra length of cord I can load a tractor or whaterver while keeping a safe distance away from the load, in case the cable were to break.

We also installed a set of the plug in type jumper cable hookups at the rear of the towing vehicle to keep the battery on the trailer charged up whenever the trailer is in use.

So far we have not had any problems with this setup at all.

It has power in & out, and is able to freewheel too.

A fairlead roller, and a mounting plate were included as well.

At this time it is listed on their site for $399.99.

If you want to check it out a link to it is below.

I was looking at the 5500 lb. model from Harbor Freight, but maybe the 10 is a better choice. I don't have a whole lot a money to spend, but then again I sure don't want to regret not buying a bigger winch. Decisions...decisions...
Thanks for the reply.

As heavy as you can afford or make!

I built this one for almost nothing out of old sprinkler parts. A 12 volt starter motor powers it. The drum turns about 15 RPM's per minute which is just about perfect.

I've loaded a WD-9 half buried in a sand dune with rear weights inside and rear weights sticking out a foot to the outside and it worked fine.

The trailer is a 24' triple axle and I picked up a GB Moline weighted to the gills with water in the rear tires - it raised the back of my pickup ('94 Ford 3/4 ton extended cab) about 8 inches off the ground as it first started up the rear of the trailer, but as i got the tractor centered over the trailer axles it let the pickup back down and the weight then distributed perfectly to drag it home.

Actually, I've never tied onto anything before that could say no to it. One time I the cable clamps that attach the chain to the cable got hung on the rear of the trailer - when I heard the cable "singing" as it popped as it moved the cable clamp slightly, I stopped and realized it was hung. It also bent the welded frame slightly that the gear box is mounted to, but it didn't stop the winch. Not sure what would have given first if I hadn't stopped.

I had one tractor that started rolling back on me with slack in the cable as I was unloading - it snapped the cable like a piece of yarn before I realized anything was wrong. But it didn't hurt the winch and the tractor just coasted to a stop unhurt a few feet behind the trailer.

The worm gear on the gear box acts as a lock if I need to pause for a minute - and it is a towable gearbox, so I just pull the tow pin to spin the cable out quickly to whatever I'm loading.

Howard

Shoot, if I had some parts like that laying around, I'd build one just like it. You think my neighbor would mind if I "borrowed" some parts off his irrigator? haha ; ) Thanks for the pic, looks like a great set-up.

Around here in the Texas panhandle, every farmer has a pile of parts gearboxes out back.

You might ask him - he might, too.

I've even skidded tractors on with locked up brakes, so it is very stout...

You know, I didn't think of locked up brakes. The first tractor I bought had locked brakes, and it was a job to get it loaded. Thanks Howard, maybe I'll go a little bigger.

I don't remember if you looked at my truck and how its set up when you where down here or not but any how. I have 2 winches on it. One is a 2000LBS stright pull and the other one 35000LBS and both at times aren't enough. So if you can go as big as you can find and you will never have to look back and buy a bigger one. So I guess I'm saying go with a min. of 5000LBS and even that may be to small because you will find some time or the other that 5000lbs isn't enough either.

You must mean Harbor Freight. They have a "Chicago Electric" 5,500 lb. for $300. Tempting...but I don't know anything about Harbor Freight.

Harbor Freight is an offshore retailer and most of their stuff is ffrom china and is dependable. I amu using a 3000 # from there with a snatch block (makes it 6000 # maximum and have nnot had a problems loading rolling stock on my trailer. I load a M amd an A Farmall with the winch I would suggest a 5000 # winch with a snatch block for heavy pulls. That should get you out of the mud. Some guys go way overboard or pull bigger stuff.

Yep the way I see it, a snatch block gives you double the amount of winch for 20 bucks more. I've only got a 12k lb. bumper-pull trailer, so I think a 5k lb. winch with the capacity to go 10k lb. would satisfy me. Thanks for the tip.
