I received a large color postcard with a full color picture of a MF tractor with the message "To you it's an old tractor, to us it's a precious metal." On the back side is a pitch from the regional scrap metal dealer (Mankato, MN) urging me to turn my old equipment into cash. I got one the next day with a picture of an old truck on it; same message. I almost puked.

I can understand this attitude if it is in the scrap yard-- but these people want to buy your running tractor for scrap,, I guess that's just the way it is-- I also have a collection of family cars and parts going back to 1932 and up to 70 benz and classic caddy eldo-- again to them it's junk but not to us

We are on the excactly right board where this consideration doesn"t come out of the blue-except when i check my mail. That is there are those who save things ,real large things and know by the work we have done in and around them how difficult it will be to replace. It"s not just replacement to purpose by a grand sum to another nation but a loss at the same time. I cannot rewrite the feminist and speculator attitude which drives all properties closer together.People see things on different planes. That is "this is a nice airy neighborhood, look at the hills and trees(we didn"t plant) we just waltz in here and get that guy to remove all his "junk". Happens all the time. That guy planted those trees but it doesn"t matter. That guy has refridges and wash machines around to save a neighbor paying $60 for a timer or $10 for a knob. We don"t know what he is doing but that is HIS or HER property. Increasingly through Jerry Springer stuff etc. we are all morons to be put on display. This is mind control. They cannot directly attack those vermin who don"t have anything they haven"t leached off others but are perfectly capable of spreading an attitude against Southerners in general or anyone who wants to have on their Own property whatever they want. Who gave the right to the crap ideology of McMansions on 1/4 acre to dictate anything about another"s private property? Voters with the same crap in their ears voting for folks who know another way to screw other folks. So goes the "junk" so goes us. It"s all a scheme.

BRAVO,I couldn't agree with you more. The older I get the more resentment I have for "folks that ain't from around here". People need to learn to keep their nose in their own back yard!

Since the iron content in the ore mined in the US has been falling fast and imported in going up in price , the scrap prices for big iron and steel have gone up considerably and haven't stopped yet. In 5 yrs. an old stuck tractor will bring more $ for scrap than the public will pay for it to restore. The end result will be fewer tractors to restore and the ones saved will start going up at an unheard of rate. Then the "money market" people will start buying/investing and selling and making a hobby into a stock market. Don't laugh , it happened to the classic and antique auto hobby quite a few yrs. ago. Watch Barrett Jackson Auctions on tv sometime and see who's paying all that money for them cars that we "ustacud" afford! My '66 GTO that should be worth $15,000 would bring $40,000 if made available to those people. (when it reaches $75,000 it may find a new home) Hey , everybody has their price , I'm no different. Bottom line...get em while ya can , they are better than real estate cuz ya don't have ta pay taxes on em!

The only stuff we take to the scrapper is the leftovers of broken or worn out parts. Some tractors we get that are too far gone to put back together we part them out. I would rather see them go to fixing up ther tractors then destroyed. Yes its sad, there are only soo many made of one item and when they are gone its over. But getting to dozers, we had an allis chalmers HD6 one time, the steeing clutches went out on it. The cost of new clucthes was about $3800...more than what she was worth. We sold it to a guy in northern Michigan that only does AC dozers. Dturke

Yep, the scrap yards have recieved alot of materials in the last few years. Well, as they say, you can't save em all. Sounds like a real shame about the big old running dozer, but I can think of a few big dozers in this area that have been parked for many years because something went wrong with them that costs a fortune to fix and the construction companys are looking for newer, nicer, more reliable machines as time is serious money in that game. The local scrap yard here will allow you to buy stuff out of it, but once it hits their yard, they want big $$$ for it, many times what they paid. I think as the years march on, there is going to be alot of good running old tractors without homes as the average collector gets older and older, and they die off, and the younger guys all want new tractors. You can buy a good running and decent looking Farmall H for $1,000 right now in this area at an auction, that can't be too far away from scrap price.

Yea,it bothered me to pass up an Oliver OC4 crawler last fall that was going to the scrap yard. He wanted $625 for it with an AC Anderson blade, but the tracks were so far gone,I just couldn't justify rescuing it. Guess if had had my drothers,i'd rather have seen it go to a salvage yard as a parts doner.

On the other hand.I've been selling off a lot of stuff latley, for scrap at a better price than people would pay to use it.
We hauled 2 goosenecks of stainless steel,in them there were cooking/stew items that I'd priced here at about 1/2 what they brought for scrap, and was told, NO WAY it's worth that.
Another advantage of scrapping,no bad checks,no wating on no shows, and NO crying when they find a fault 2 months later on something they bought at [or less] than scrap.
My thoughts right or wrong.
P.S. never had the scrap yard man pull up in the yard and blow a horn like a HETHERN,or insult the wife on a priced item!!!!

I hauled in a load of REAL JUNK last week. You know the stuff. If a pack rat like me says it's scrap, it's S.C.R.A.P. While I was at the scrap yard, I couldn't help but notice a pile of wheel weights and suitcase weights that was about to be loaded in a rail car. The guy at the scales said a John Deere dealers truck dropped them off a few days earlier. Apparently they're worth more as scrap than they are as weights. All sorts of brands in the pile. Probably 100 or so pieces. Cashier wouldn't hear of selling any to me. When this stuff is gone, it's gone forever.

I here ya. I went to a sale a few days ago and the only guy bidding against me on a bunch of old MM drills was the junk guy. Afterwards I was talking to him and he was telling me stories of how the crushed running tractors and good equipment. It makes me sick. Right now I have over 50 pieces of equipment in verbal agreement bought so they dont meet the scrapper. I wish I was a bit older (17) and a bit richer to save this stuff faster.

Yep and mosr scrap places will not even let you buy a tractor from them or at least not in my area. I hauled in a junked car not long ago and they had an Allis WD sitting there and asked them about it and was told once its here it stays here and is cut up. Sad very sad. Guess thats why I have 30 plus tractors here and not will end up being cut up for scrap, so do get taken apart for parts but there to far gone for me to fix but at least they don't end up as scrap iron

yeah I know how you feel we have over 75 yrs of stuff we would like to sell to make room inc farmall A's every one wants them for junk prices-- we used them and the memories are great, but they mean nothing to the people out there- so I guess we will just keep them and let them sit idle-- too bad but thats nature--

Someday(I just looked and didn"t find) I will relate an excellent little article. It was about the scrapping of the big old Deusenburgs and Cads and Whites and many other names of large autos back in the day. It recounted the trials of some guys trying to get some brass lantern lights for a car they were restoring. There was enough passion there to light the fire.Keep the faith. I always like the A and Super A anyway.

Last summer I went to the big selkirk scrap yards. a big local construction companies lowbed pulled in right behind me with a 1958 D9 cable dozer on the deck. They fired her up, drove it off the lowbed and walked it straight over to the the jaws where they cut up old rail cars and big stuff like that..... I watched as they cut it into pieces small enough for the magnet to pick up, sadest day I have experianced at a scrap yard, i pleaded with the scale man, but he said once it hits the yard thats where it stays. i phoned the construction outfit the next day and i asked them why they hadn't put it up for sale, they told me they had tried to sell it for years and nobody wanted it, because it was just too big to move around on a lowbed and the transmission was very weak.
