I am considering purchasing a L245DT from a neighbor but I noticed the front hubs both are leaking hydralic oil. How involved is replacing these seals? Is it a job an average mechanic can tackle without taking it in to the dealer?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Leo

I have an L245DT and I replaced all the seals, gaskets and bearings in the left front hub mechanism. It is pretty basic nuts and bolts. The bearing races can all be tapped out with a punch and hammer, no pullers are necessary. If your bearings and races are fine, it is very simple. There are seals where the hubs enter the gear tower. There are also seals midway on the gear tower at the pivot point. This entire assembly will just fall away when you remove the steering arm on top. If it is just the hub seal leaking, I would leave the pivot point intact and just remove the gear cover that carries the hub. It has an o-ring gasket that you will need to replace. Tap the new seals in with a bearing driver or an appropriately sized sockt or pipe.

Thanks for all the great information. I think I will give it a try since it sounds like there are not alot of tricky gears or other advanced mechanical skills required.

Thanks again for your help.

I have an L285 an I have been able to do all the work on it so far but I am a 40 year mechanic. Anyway it has been pretty easy to work on. the only thing I don't like is the small radiator you have keep it clean when working in dusty places. One thing I did was set the rear wheels out all the way these things are real tippy. Also I'm going to have the front tires filled with foam I'm tired of flats. One would think that a tractor tire would be blackberry proof. Walt

Leo..I have a small Kabota - 1550 / 4x4 and have done a lot of work on it.
Just get the book from the dealer and go slow I have not found anything I can't do on it. Great small tractors but remember = think "METRIC"
