Do you as your getting older find that your get up and go has got up and went some place with out you?? Seems like any more it takes me a week to do what it took me a day to do 15 years ago. Sure wish I still had the get up and go I once did. Oh well guess its 2 things happening. #1 old age catching up to me and the other being disabled sure makes it hard to get done what needs to be done. Some how when you can only work 30 minutes to and hour then have to take a brake for an hour its real hard to get much done. So do you guys have that problem also and how does one find there get up and go again?????

I don't know just how old you are, but I have the same problems at 56. A couple of things that have helped me are getting some good aerobic exercise almost every day and also being careful about my diet and losing some weight.

After being borderline diabetic for years, the Doc told me that I now have Type II diabetes. But the oral medications seem to be working--and I feel better than before I started taking them.

You might want to get checked out if you haven't had a physical for awhile. The doctors might find something and might be able to make you feel a whole lot better.

I have forgotten why you are disabled. But living with a disability is very taxing and often leads to depression. Most depression is treatable and the anti-depressants can really help with the symptoms, one of which is having trouble getting anything done.

Ageing is a bit**! and not easy for most people. But it does seem better than the alternative. Good luck!

I thought I was getting old till last fall a man was having a heart attack on the top of our water tower. I wasn't the first man to the top but I was second and no one passed me. I caught a lot of bad mouthing for not wearing a harness or roping off. So after a half hour of catching all the guff, I decided that fourty or so men on the ground (all having less birthdays than me) had to be put in their place. Lets just say that the old timer did not have to use any fancy words--just the red neck cuss words. I suggested any one of them to follow me up with or without a harness or shut the ----- --up. Now in all honesty I felt pretty good that I had no takers, because I would of had to take a nap before going up again. So I'm not so sure we all can't do it if we just had to. I know that if I get a real burst of energy now I have learned to just sit down as it will soon pass. I have adjusted you might say. We must all think of what we do have and not concern ourselves with what we wish we still had.

I know this is about tractors, but here goes. A good motor will wear a lot when ran at full throttle. Those with a lot of hours on them to need to throttle back, say to 1/2 or 3/4 throttle.

I turned 62 this year and I am retired from a physically demanding job. I understand lower body pain, I have had 8 knee surgerys but still have my original ones. I see the bone doc once a week for a bad back and neck. My hearing is shot too,

I enjoy walking 3 - 4 miles in the morning with my dog, I enjoy working in the shop 6 to 8 hours a day on my tractor restoration, I enjoy boating on the lake once a week, I enjoy riding the ATV in the spring and fall, I enjoy working around the outside of the house. I enjoy visits from my grandkids.

In my shop I have a large soft recliner that sits in front of the wood stove. I take a rest there two or three times a day when working in the shop. I even take a daily nap there.

This is what I like about retirement, work when you want to, rest when you feel like it, and play as often as the weather will allow.

But as Old said, sometimes I feel like just resting all day. I don't let it happen too often because I am concerned that if I do, it may become normal. I saw my healthy uncle retire and sit down in front of the TV. He was dead 6 months later from "normal conditions".

Disabilities are a different thing and I can't relate to their effects combined with aging. Hang in there Old.

The good thing about getting to 63 is the mystery and excitement. Cause every morning when you get up you don"t know which part of your body isn"t going to work as good as it did yesterday. Just gotta keep goin", too many things to get done to stop now.

A Sign hanging on my Shop Wall I've had for many years reads:
"I've gone to find myself,If I get back before I return,Keep me here". I have tried for many years to figure out what that means,At 70 years I finally decided that I don't need to know.

I know the feeling, but I'm not complaining yet, anyone who has physical limitations in addition to the effects of aging, is at a further deficit and it't harder to fight back, so it's understandable that sometimes it's easier to give in. That's how I see it, and knowing this, it's like a having a slow consistent leak of energy, will or discipline to keep up the fight.

I believe a lot of it has to do with ones daily regimen, those who can exercise daily, even 3 times a week, and also maintain a diet that provides good nutrients, get adequate rest, usually maintain a better quality of life longer as they age. I've noticed it helps, because I am also starting to notice how much one can drag when you don't get enough sleep, or work really hard all day, seems like you have nothing left and then it gets you, you start slowing down or literally have nothing left. High stress is another bad thing, nothing good about a stressful life, or job.

Ya ever have one of those dreams where you are trying to move or do something and no matter what you do it's like being in slow motion, that is what I compare this slowing down thing, and it is so annoying, can remember going gangbusters at so many jobs, used to jump on off trucks like it was nothing, now I step off the truck onto a ladder, carefully. LOL !

It's so easy to talk about, planning a good diet and following an exercise routine, but it takes time and money, good food ain't cheap and with the work/family schedules a lot of people keep, it becomes a monumental task sometimes.

Sometimes you have to invest a little in yourself. I think that is a good thing, go take that walk or prepare a good meal for yourself or get the rest you need. No one is any good when exhausted, malnurished, overworked, or stressed out. Sometimes you have no choice, but when you do, invest a little in yourself, it's worth it.

You know I was surprised, had been chomping on those clif bar energy bars every so often, and they are a real pick me up, get em at the place I hate to support, walmart.

I think aging is a trade off, we lose our physical ability slowly, but we get smarter so it is not that bad.

Sure must have something to do with being over 50.Can't work like I used to,but on the other hand,I don't care either. I was talking to an Old Order Mennonite at an auction the other day.I said something about somebody his age fathering a child. (he was just over 40) He said "you can still work all day and do that". I said "give it a few years and you won't even be able to work all day, much less work all day and still do that".

When you loose the painfree useage of you knees as I have, you stumble around like a drunk. Since this problem has much worsened for me in the last few years, I recently retired at 62. My upper body strength is nearly what it was when I was 30, I work out faithfully with a weight machine and dumbells. I'd rather be a strong half a man than a total weakling. I can curl a 50# dumbell 50 consecutive reps with either arm, and at the same time my knees and legs will barely get me up/down a flight of steps. Strong/weak all in one package. I gotta keep a little stamina though, my wife is not much older than my son. LOL

Yup! Turned 64 a couple of weeks ago and tried to figure how much I've slowed down. I figue I'm only operating at 3/4 throttle of what I used to. So-- I act accordingly and don't plan to do quite as much. And for that stuff that I would have/could have rared right into 30 years ago--well, now I kind of plan those activites for the weekends when one (or two or all three) of our boys are here.

wfw is right, and the hereafter is particularly bad when half your stuff is in the attic and the other half in the basement; you spend a lot of time retracing your steps, but up and down, too...
Old, one important thing is to train yourself to pace yourself slower,"cuz a lot of the get-up-an-go has just got-up-and-went; don"t try to force yourself to do what you did 10 yrs ago, it just don"t work, and try to accept some things are just not going to get done like they used to (75 going on ??) Take care.

I guess it's inevitable, we slow down as we age. It helps to keep your weight down and try to maintain some level of fittness though. Even walking helps. My FIL is very heavy and goes to the doctor all the time with all sorts of aches and pains but refuses to take the doc's advice to slim down, "eating's all I can do any more". Attempts to suggest there might be a connection are useless.

Old, if I had the answer to that question I'd buy you any tractor you ever wanted, and throw in a brand new pickup just for giggles!

I do find that it's harder to get up and go to work than it is to get up and go to play. Enjoying what you're doing helps, but it's not the cure-all for that thing called age that sooner or later gets all of us.....
