Hey guys, anyone out there have experience with a NH 717 chopper. I have a JD 70 lp I would be using it with. The one row corn head would seem to be a good match and I wouldn't think the 5 foot hay head would be to far off but wondering what the consesus is?

we ran one for years behind a 970 Case or 1850 Oliver and it stood up fine to 100hp. We always kept the knives and shear bar up which is the key to doing a good job and reducing stress on the drive. Dad would get the drum rolling and run the shear bar in until it started ticking then back it off a little it cut really fine. pans are prone to wearing through. We relined ours once.

We ran a 718 for over 30 years starting out on an IH 856 turbo and later on a 1086. We had lots of extra power but I don't know how much good it did because that machine could only handle so much crop at a time. We finally parked the 718 after one of the bolts holding the shear bar broke which let it get into the knives and made a big mess.

That would probably be a well matched pair. Much less and the tractor will take a beating, and much more and you won't have a 717 any more. You'll have the pieces of a 717. A neighbour of mine ran one with a Ford 7710 which was probably turned to a bit over 100 HP.... and it didn't take long before he twisted the harvester to pieces..... but he's broken 100 pound anvil's.... so go figure.

Ran one for years with a 70 hp IH worked fine.Even ran it for a few years with a 1466 IH 150Hp. We were careful and we had no trouble. They are a good chopper but they are a cut and throw therfore they have a hard time throwing haylage to the back of the wagon. They are still the best made at the time they were made I feel

I ran one with a 2 row head with a 4040 Deere. My brother ran it while I was in the hospital. Broke the big main shaft in the knife drum. So much for the 717.

was it just to much horse for it? The Ford dealer here in Ravenna sold hundreds of them back then. There is a parts yard in Grant that has about a dozen of them for parts so I figured that would be handy if needed.

I don't know what the deal was with it. I was in the hospital for 8 days. They didn't want to tell me anything happened to it. They borrowed one and finished up. I took it to Trufant to the consignment sale the next spring and sold it.I told them what was wrong but the heads were good,so it's parts now.

Yes Ran a 717 with a JD720 worked good with the one row corn head. For hay in Michigan, first cut it is happier with a 7ft windrow than a 9ft.

Ran one with a Ford 851 gas, 45 Hp, good match on corn, never had the hay head.
