4020 gauges

I just replaced the fuel gauge on my 1965 4020. Still won"t work, when I turn the key on it bottoms out at empty. I have 12 volt at the neg., not much, about 5 volts out to the sending unit. I pulled the sending unit out and moving that around, made no difference.Grounded the new gauge as directions said.Also replaced the warning light on the dash for the generator, now it stays on constantly. I checked voltage coming out of the generator, it"s 12 volts at both poles. I assume this makes up the 24 volt system. Any suggestions, batteries don"t seem to be draining. Thanks for any help on either problem. Should of left alone. Chuck

I don't know what's wrong with your gauge, but both of Dad's 4020's are 12 volt - not 24 volt. They are also positive ground - not negative.

Thanks for the tips. I'll check the voltage between the batteries. It is a positive ground gauge. I did also ground the sending unit when I had it out. Sorry just forgot to mention that. The late model 4020's were 12 volt systems. This is a 1965 model, they were 24 volt positive ground systems. Thanks, Chuck

What does the voltage read across the two batteries with the tractor running?

IIRC, it"s supposed to be about 29 Volts.

The gauge should be powered by (-) 12-Volts (nominal), in relation to the chassis.

As you alternate between grounding the wire to the sender to the chassis and not grounding it, the gauge should alternate between empty and full.

You can"t just pull the sender out of the tank and expect the gauge to move as you swing the float. the sender has to also be grounded to function.

There are gauges for (+) ground systems and (-) ground systems, and, according to a guy that was working with a 4010 a while back, the parts system is confused as to what is what with the gauges.

You could go over to the KL Forum and ask for "Jim in AK", as he had some part numbers for the guage and sender that worked together on his 24-Volt system.
