Does anyone have a good way to clean the gum/varnish from a fuel tank? The tank was full and did not show signs of rust but the machine has sat in a garage for about 10 years and the bottom of the tank is nasty

Thanks,
Oldgit

The best solvent to use is "Acitone" It is expensive but to my knowledge it is the strongest paint thinner. I have used this many times and usually buy it at Lowes.

Drain out that nasty old stuff, get rid of it and do not try to use it in any manner. "I speak from experience". A few gallons of fresh gasoline, slosh it around, let it set, and then drain it out. You may need to repeat that procedure, but fresh gas will get rid of that old sludge and varnish about as quick as anything else.

Laquer Thinner works well. I tried kerosene, paint thinner, mineral spirits, choke cleaner, electra-clean, brake cleaner, and others but the laquer thinner was the only thing that worked. I have heard that a length of chain will help scrape the bottom. HTH

If you can get E-85 gas, that works pretty good. The cheapest way to do it.
