How big of a job is getting the flywheel of a john deere b 48 , I got a small leak behind the flywheel throwing oil on inside of cover.I liked to fix it but i dont know about getting that off? Am i going to need a puller? Its not the gasket to the block, theres a cover leaking right behind the flywheel. Any help you fellows can give me would be appreciated .

Friend has an A with same problem. He fashioned a metal shield to keep getting hit in the face with oil. Been that way for about 15 years that I know of. He uses it a lot but not for heavy farm work.

The cork seal and oil slinger are indeed inside that D shaped seal housing under/behind the flywheel and you may as well get its new gasket also. Neither are all that expensive but it usually the cork seals bad which is why oils running out.

If it uses the cork seal inside that D shaped housing under/behind the flywheel, I soak the new one in hot oil prior to installation. DONT FORGET the tip/pin on the inner flywheel near the center fits back in the open slot in the oil slinger (also in the D housing) so it turns it. If the old flywheel bolts are stretched Id use new grade 8 bolts and drive the flywheel almost alllll the way back in (otherwise you end up with excess end play), the spec is somethign like to within 0.015 or so. Torque the 2 big bolts n use her a while n retorque. As the gents told ya GET IT BACK ON THE SAME SPLINE IN TIME.

If you're going to buy or find a manual get the JD SM2004 service manual for your B or a I&T JD-4 shop manual, NOT the SM2000 as it won't have what you need unless you just want info on valve grinding specs and extensive electrical components repair but contains no other engine info of use.

Remove the outside cover, there wil be 2 bolts visible, and a large pressed tin nut. Remove the pressed tin nut and loosen the two large bolts. Be sure the flywheel and crankshaft are marked so that you can reinstall it in the right position. you may need to drive a chisel in the space between the slots on the flywheel. It should pull off by hand. Be careful they tend to be heavy. You will need a B130R cork seal or if it used a rubber D-ring seal use a B3028R. The seal is located inside of the flywheel spacer.

If you don't have a experienced pro to assist or the real Deere service manual. You will get to do this job more than once. Errors with end play, assembly order, clearances or pinched washers will make the tractor worse not better. 1-800-522-7448
