This is just a wild idea that's a little, well maybe a lot on the far side. I pulled the rod caps on an F20 I'm slowly taking apart and the babbit (sic) has come loose and spun in one of the rods. The cap only has a couple of small scratches in it and the outside of the babbit looks OK so here's the wild idea; can I epoxy the babbit back in and make it hold? I pulled the caps last night and that's as far as I got, so it's still sitting there with the babbit stuck to the crank and the pistons are still stuck. It will be a long time before this thing runs again so I do have time to find another rod, but I just thought I would run this by you guys to see what you thought. Jim

No you cannot. Once it has spun it will be galled to the crank and at the very least you are going to need a new bearing and probably turn the crank to smooth up the journal. I think I have some undersize bearing shells.

Jim

I have a 39 that you are more than welcome to rob parts off of. Engine is stuck though.

Was thinking about that last saturday when we were doing that other job.

Listen to Jim N., his solution is the correct one, especially since you're gonna have to tear that engine down, anyhow. You might as well do it right ! Best of luck. Jim B.

I don't think it will work... bearings are a heat-sink that pulls heat away from one place and directs it elsewhere to be dissipated - I would be concerned that the epoxy is not going to transfer heat appropriately.

Do a search for Rice Equipment for F-series parts... or weberstractorworks.com for NOS parts.

are you going to fix it up or sell it to some poor soul who will find out that his bearings have been expoxied?

Use Industrial JB Weld.

Sorry, not a real option for two reasons. The first is that the plastic matrix of the epoxy will degrade in the stress of the rod. The second is that the remaining babbit is likely to be internally delaminating. Not a good investment. There will be several locations that will rebabit that rod. JimN

Thanks for the advice. Like I said, the shells are still stuck to the crank and I can't get them out until I get the piston free and pushed up. The rust in the bores cleaned right up above the pistons, but the sluggs are pretty stubborn. It has aluminum pistons so I don't want to be too violent with them. Jim
