Thanks to those who responded to my message about a fuel gauge and sending unit for a 4010 john deere. After the messages and some discussion with a deere parts guru, I have determined that the sending units and the gauges are precisely matched - at least the deere products. Net/net, if you ever need to change the gauge or sending unit on an EARLY model XX10 or XX20 series deere tractor, keep in mind that they were origionally assembled with positive ground 24 volt systems. If the tractor remains 24 volt positive ground, the origional replacement parts/part numbers will work fine. However, if the tractor has been converted to a 12 volt/negative ground system, you need to get the gauge and sending unit for a later model XX20 series tractor. If it's helpful to anyone, the part numbers for the later XX20 series tractors are as follows: Gauge: AR45436 and sending unit: AR46268.

Thanks to those of you that helped me, maybe sometime I can return the favor.

Sorry, your terminology is incorrect. There never was a 24 volt positive grounded 4010. The 24 volt system consisted of TWO 12 volt systems with a common ground, one positive ground, the other negative ground. That way the 24 volt generator charged two 12 volt batteries and one 24 volt starter loaded those two batteries, while 12 volt loads were split between the positive and negative 12 volt systems. The fuel gauge was supplied from the 12 volt system with positive ground, just like the gas tractor that was 12 volt positive ground.

Its most likely that there were several vendors of gauges and senders (which always have to match) and some gauges (though none of the senders) appear to have been polarity sensitive. I know that the indication changed when I swapped my gas 4020 from positive to negative ground, but it only disappeared because the wiper of the sender was worn away. When I corrected that and adjusted the float arm, it again gives reliable fuel level indications with no other changes.

Between vibration and age, its no surprise that the sender has worn out.

Gerald, thanks for the note. Humors me a bit. Hell, I learn something new every time I work on this old tractor. If it weren't older than me, I'd think I have half a chance to figure some of it out. There for a while I was about to take that one guys advice and just use a broom handle - and at a fraction of the cost of that fancy gauge and sender. Again, Thanks. :-)

I used a bit of plaster lathe, it was lighter than the hoe handle until I fixed the sender on my 4020. The sender on my MF-135 gave troubles when I bought it and the previous owner had been using a hammer handle. Both work for gauging fuel, both could cause a fire, both could introduce dirt to the fuel system to cause more troubles. Gauges that work are nice and both of mine now work.

Speaking of fuel, watch out for the diaphragm of the fuel lift pump leaking fuel to the crankcase. It can do that and still supply fuel to the injection pump (or carburetor in my case). The gas tractor won't burn the bottom third of the tank when the lift pump quits pumping. Which leads one to dispute the gauge's display of avaiable fuel.

Thanks for posting those part numbers 4010RLW. I have done several 24V to 12V neg conversions on 4020 tractors and never had a problem with the original fuel guage/sender working. I was alsays puzzled why others posted that they had to change the fuel guage when doing the 24V to 12V conversion, but the early VS late parts thing must be the reason.
