Remember me...I asked about driving a tractor 70 miles. Well, at the auction on Saturday I went to see a 1967 JD loader 4020 gas and ad said 2700 hrs. I don't need it to do a lot a farming so I thought I may get it cheap because diesel is preferred. It was rough...had two rebuilds already [found out hrs were wrong], tires are 60%, fenders rusty, grill banged in, gages don't work and loader had a bale spear and manure bucket but no regular bucket (and that's what I really need). I'm not even sure about the PTO or 3 point because the whole demonstration was about 30 seconds. The owner was deceased but the boys told me it ran OK. It didn't seem to run that good to me but I thought with some TLC I could bring it back. I went to $7500 and didn't get it and I would still need to put a few bucks into this thing. I wanted a 4020 bad but didn't let emotions get the best of me. And I think I went too high considering what they showed me...but that's my fault. I do not regret losing this tractor. What do you guys think?

You obviously have a keen sense for what you will be pleased with. Every time I started to look for the next "Thing", I pretty well new what I was looking for. Just kept at it until that right piece came along. I'm also amazed at how many times I set a price that I would be willing to pay and ended up finding something within that budget. It is out there.

All these comments prove that if you want a machine to use, go Red but if you got too much money, go Green! You'd never guess I grew up on the green ones, would ya!
I can agree with Allan about the 5020 but I'd rather give my right whatever for a 6030!!!! Which is about how much they cost, too!

Chances are the insides were in the same condition as the outide. From my experience if the tractor is all rough looking it is not well maintained. Just my opinion, Stan

Sound like a good one to let go by. If it's a good deal your looking for, you may want to consider something else. I'm not saying the 4020 isn't a good tractor. Just that around here you can buy more HP in better condition for less $$ if you look beyond JD.

Brian I don't know where you are located but, there is a 4020 diesel setting on the AGCO lot in Muleshoe, TX. Looks sharp has big rubber on rear, fronts need replacing, new paint. Looks to have had a cab on it at one time, no fenders. Really a pretty strait looking tractor. I could not find a serial number on it to check the year. I am not sure where to look on a new generation JD for the tag. If you are interested
call the is number 806-272-3308, ask for Tom Ladd.

Now,

This is just my opinion, so don't all you fellas jump on me at the same time; don't draw and quarter me. It's just my opinion. :>)

However, if a guy spends any amount of time around those 4020s, the "emotion" wears off real quick. They weren't all that hot when they were brand spankin' new.

A fairly cheap priced tractor that was more or less reliable. Sure wouldn't trade my little H for one tho and that be the truth of the matter from this hill.

Now, talk 5020 and it's a whole 'nother story.

Allan

Allen, you gotta be kidding in reply to Allan In NE, 03-26-2007 09:28:08
You must have inhaled some of the paint from that fancy cab of yours. I grew up on a Michigan dairy with 2 3020s, 2 4020 and I bought a 5020 when I took over. Granted the 5020 was a heavy beast but when it comes to manueverability and horse per pound, the 5020 was disgracefull. All the other tractors had power shift and they are the easiest to use, most versatile, most dependable tractor I have ever used. The only weak point in those old Deeres was the PTO brake. I never had the opportunity to use a 4320 but I believe from the description it may have been the best tractor to have hit the farm. I know the first thing people are gonna say is what about IH, well I have worked at many other farms and used about 40 different Red ones. I will give IH guys the point that red tractors are pulling son of a guns. But once ya look at replacing the TA on a regular basis, rebuilding the front end way to often and having to stop to search for a gear cuz the shifter is shot, they aren't quite as reliable as some people let ya think. I have spent thousands of hours on 504,666,706,856,966,1066,1086,1206, and a couple different 2+2s. The 666 was the closest thing to compare to a 3020 in ease of use. The 856 was the closest thing to a 4020 in the field but no where near as manueverable or easy to shift. There is a reason that so many old Reds are seen at tractor pulls, just as there is a good reason why the 20 series Deeres bring the price they do. Lots of people used them and found out what they could do and 40 + years later they are still doing it.

Thanks Allan- I probably needed to hear that. I read a lot of your posts and value your judgement. I think next time I will go for the HP I need and forget about the alleged 'best' tractor.

Those 5020's are sure a hunk of iron ! They don't bring a whole lot more than a Farmall H though. That 1000 rpm only pto and heavy size just don't go over as good for a chore tractor. You don't find too many in Northern Ohio, but 4020's are all over the place ! I'm sure there are still plenty of those Farmall H & M tractors earning their keep too.

Nope, I'd be feeling pretty glad I didn't get that tractor for that kind of money, since to get it from the condition you describe to 100% both cosmetically and mechanically, you'd have an awful lot more money in it. I have decided I don't want to ever buy a piece of junk again, I used to believe that buying a junker and fixing it up was a cheaper way to go, but I have changed my opinion of that with some experience.

just a question. How many 'projects and years did it take you to make the decisiion of not bringing home "junk" anymore????? I just realized it this month,, well it has been bugging me forf a while now but, this month it kicked me right in the teeth. I am thinking you are correct you cant buy them "cheap" and get a deal after you put time nand money into them.. This isnt so much if it is a trailer queen and not going to work,, if you only have that one tractor to play with,, but ..

I am sending quite a few of mine to the sales these next weeks/months.. and just settle for my 3 working tractors and 3 collectibles that I can go and work on and relax and spend time with the boys.. any other time I want or need nother working tractor it is not going to be a bargain,

my wife would say she heard this rant before, allan that 666 is going on april 21st,, hahaha. pat

I don't understand the green thing myself. I bought a 666 IH at auction 3 years ago with fairly new paint, brand new 16.9x38 rears no leaks, starts easy runs the best, burns half the fuel of a JD. I have run it a lot over the last 3 years without any problems except last year broke shaft in hydraulic pump. I paid 4400 and was tickled pink with it.

consider y0urself lucky. It doens't sound like it was worth $7500. Maybe $4000 or $5000 from the way it was described.

Considering the condition, I think about $4,500 should have bought it.

I don't think you missed a thing and if you thought you bid too much trying to get it you learned or know what is too much. Find some others you can take more time inspecting and get what you want so you feel better about what you paid for it. Loader tractors are usually going to be a lot rougher shape. Find one that hasn't had a loader on it before if you can. If you want a loader usually farther ahead to buy a later model that isn't all patched up with someone's welding or a new one with quick hitch attachments.

I agree with Ken.. my brother in law recently bought a 4010 gasser with loader, been painted once, fairly clean tractor..needs a valve job and hydraulic pump rebuild..he won't admit what he paid for it,but I know it was over $11,000..I don't get it..I might have give $3500 for it,just cause I like the loader..

Obviously, fuel prices aren't the only thing going up in price! Farm equipment prices at spring auction sales are on the rise. No such thing as a bargain anymore, not even scrap iron!
