I'm in Wayne county. Many teenagers are into scrapping instead of workin' at McDonalds or Wally mart. Hard times.

A retired scrapdealer told me last week the price of what the yards are offering is set the first TUESDAY of the month, look for a big jump in April and a big drop in May. I think I will watch it and see.

Buyers generally don't pay top dollar here in rural Alabama. Local prices, cars $7.00 per hundred, #1 steel $9.00 per hundred, #1 copper $2.05 per pound, #1 stainless steel $1.15 per pound, aluminum $.84 per pound.

Just an idea of where the base metals business is at, these are prices at the close on March 16 as reported in the Financial Times in London.
Nickel $47,700 per ton (expected to peak at $50,000 per ton. then crash, steel makers are substituting.)
Copper $6,620 per ton
Aluminum $2,812.5 per ton
I wouldn't run right to the local scrapper and expect to get these prices for scrap, but this gives you a fair idea of where those prices are going. China is buying everything they can get their hands on.

Bad part or the high scrap price is: We are selling off a valuable asset.. I am guilty of this, too, so I am not trying to preach.. Most of the scrap is going to China, they are starting up some huge steel mills. The ships come here filled with cheap junk to sell at Walmart, and return to China, loaded with scrap metal.. Not many years ago, in our area, there were lots of old junk tractors, trucks, and implements sitting around.. Then, the county started giving folks 30 days to get rid of them, claiming they were an "Eyesore".. Now, most of the old iron is gone.. Once all of our metals are sold to China, we are going to be in a heap of trouble...
