Nice answers below, how about putting it on a good scale in a graduated container. Then the brand will not matter. You will find that they are so close it makes no difference unless you are doing some high science. JimN

I don't have the exact numbers, but gear oil will weigh more than ATF. I doubt the difference is any more than 0.3 lbs/gal.

Could you post the exact brand of fluids?
The MSDS I have looked at so far show that they are close to the same weight or they could be the same weight.
Could you post the manufacaturer and the brand name.

Old friend used to say "A pint"s a pound the world around." I think it"s a good "rule of thumb"

Oil weighs about 90% of water and water weighs in at 62.4 lbs. per cubic foot there is 1728 cubic inches to a cubic foot and there is 231 cubic inches to a gallon So the formula is as follows: 1728/231 X .9 = your answer.

You first need to tell us what temperature. If I remember right the specific gravity of ATF (M2C166H) at ambient (60ºF) is 0.875 g/cc. The Spec. Wt. is 0.0316 lb/cubic inch. The Spec Wt. is 54.62 lb/cubic foot. The Density is (8.190E-05 lb*sec squared)/square inches squared. So a gallon of M2C166H oil at 60ºF is approximately 7.2996 lbs. If I remember right I think a gallon of water is 8 lbs. Could be wrong though.
