Most tractor men or farmers keep a few guns around..thought I might ask if any of you have one of these rifles. I know ammo is rare as hens teeth...but I'd still like to have one. Any of you have one you'd sell?

I bought a TC contender years ago its Serial # 1243 doesn't have the cougar stamped on the side I'm told its worth about $10,000 now. I bought 17/223 wildcat when they first started making the 17. It has 4000 FPS Muzzle velocity. 12 in barrel and can shoot beer cans at 100 yard all day. Strictly hand load though. But a real nice varmint cartridge. 25 gr. hollow points is about all one can find for it. They do a number on anything that they hit as they explode on contact.

Fellers,

I appreciate all the replies. I understand all the recommendations..but I just happen to want one of these rifles. I always wanted one way back when they first appeared but couldn't afford one then. I just sorta got re-interested and thought maybe somebody might have one or know where one is that could be bought.

I have 4 varmint rifles and I have reloaded for years. Practicality isn't the point at all, just the desire to own a gun that they don't make any longer.

I used to hunt groundhogs with a burning passion and over the years, I probably owned 15 different varmint rigs. All i have now is my 700 in .223, a custom 700 varmint in 22PPC, a Sako sporter in 6PPC and a Sako 243 sporter. I also have a nice Charles Daly 22 magnum (Remington now imports them and calls it a model 5)...but I don't count it as a varmint rifle...yet it does fine work out to a 100 yards. I am less than impressed by the new 17 rimfires...but they seem to be all the rage nowadays.

I'll keep looking for a 591, might glom onto one someday...it'll be just another safe queen, but I have wanted one for over 30 years.

A more practical gun would be any small bore centerfire rifle. Even if it uses an obsolete cartridge, with a centerfire round you have the option to handload. Of course, if a 5mm RMR is converted to centerfire, handloading is the ONLY option.

I bought one about 10-15 ys ag.. I now see the ammo going for 75$ a box.

There was a big ammo producer that was taking pre-orders in 2004 to make a million round run on the 5mmmag ammo.. but couldn't get enough pre orders.. I hope they reconsidder.

Have also seen discussion about centerfire conversion bolts..

Hi Mark, My dad bought me one of these when they first came out in the early '70's I think.I used it around the farm for many years. It's too bad Remington discontinued the ammo,I've seen it at gun shows at 60 or 70 dollars a box.If you want to shoot, buy a Ruger in 17 HMR. I have one and it is just as fun as the 5MM.

I second the 17hmr..... 2620 fps with a 17 grain v-max bullet..... 5 shots inside a quarter at 100 yards, with 4 shots touching....

Very accurate, shoots like a laser out to 160 yards or so..... .

I would not want to see a groundhog hit by one of those. Wouldn't have to retreive the carcas anyhow...
