Hey all, have been considering a Chevy Blazer, probably '98 - '02 range, is there any problem areas I should be looking for?

Got four in my immediate family. For the most part, pretty dependable. Maintenance and brakes like any vehicle. Have replaced a couple front wheel bearings, and am due to put a lower ball joint in one as soon as weather permits. But what car hasn't had a wheel bearing or a ball joint wear out? Sure wish there was a way to grease the wheel bearings, but they are a sealed unit, replaced as a unit. Unit also has abs sensor built in, and is part of unit. One of the two was due to abs sensor failure, other bearing failure. Otherwise, they are dependable, good ride, versatile, haul a good load of feed, pull pretty good trailer load. Fuel economy is in the 19-20mpg range with general driving. Considering you are running the equivalent of a full size car, probably not too bad. I find myself using the 4wd drive quite a bit, due to bad weather, road, and driving in fields, and pulling wagons, etc. Excellent 4wd, especially if it comes with "auto 4wd" which kicks in only when needed.

I've owned a 2001 s-10 truck(same as a blazer), the ex wife had a 98 s-10 blazer, and my brother has a 2001 s-10 blazer. All were 4-wd, all had the 4.3, and the truck was the only manual shift.

The 4.3 is a good engine, as long as its cared for. I personally won't own an automatic, but thats just me. The ex's was an auto and it was at 150,000 miles and that was the last contact I had with it, but I had heard through the grapevine that she had started having tranny trouble, but she drove like a mad woman. The brothers tranny went out at 75,000 miles, but he tows a lot. The automatic's have a a sun shell peice that doesn't like to tow very much, so watch for one that has towed a lot.

The front ends under the 4wd's suck. I promise you will be changing front wheel hub assemblies(wheel bearings, you can't repack them, they are sealed), front axels, and upper and lower(more lower than upper) ball joints. I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER 4WD GM COMPACT OR MIDSIZE. None of the problems were serious, but who wants to be nickel and dimed to death or has the time to always change wheel hub assemblies.

The only other problem I had with my truck was it liked to eat the u-joint on the rear of the driveline, but I've never heard anyone else complain of that one, so I must have just been lucky. Hope this helps some.

You gotta use OEM front axles. I had an '88 S-15 Jimmy that used to go through a front axle every single year. At $300 a whack it was killing me. Finally a guy said for $450 he'd put in an OEM axle, I drove that one 3 years until I replaced the truck...
"rebuilt" front axles are garbage, I'll only ever get a good used or NEW and new its got to come from a dealer.

My Dodge Dakota has never needed one, knock on wood...

The both oem front axles on my s-10 truck failed between 55,000 and 65,000. Both front wheel hub assemblies were gone by 65,000 miles. I want buy anything from Advance or Autozone. I only buy NAPA premium stuff or dealer parts.

What do you guys think about the 2 dr. Tahoes? I think the full size blazers are the same. Ive been looking at some and I kinda like them. They come with the V8. I think they look pretty sharp with the dual exaust.

Stay away from the Trailblazer with the in-line 6. That engine is O.K., but they are plagued with transmission failures and the power steering pumps have a tendency to shear the main shaft.

I have a 2002 with 48,000 miles and the only trouble I have had was a bad speed sensor. The V-6 engines are bullet proof if you service them. I had another Blazer(I can't remember the year but it was the first 4 door) that had 150,000 miles on it when I sold it and it was running good. It just had a leaky sun roof.

Hey, I was figuring on it having the 4.3 V6, isn't that the standard motor?

oh i was thinking of the tahoe or yukon, i keep forgetting they renamed them since they dont make a full size blazer, they are of the s10 chassis in the 4.3 variety, yes you are right, i dont know of any issues to speak of in those either though, just go over it good before you buy to make sure it has been well cared for

as with anything its only as good as it was taken care of

other than it being a chevy ..... ... just kidn

quite a difference in body styles, i believe the 5.3 might get a little better mileage than the 5.7 i have owned a 97 and 99 suburban and they got 14 to 18, the 97 was much better than the 99

a good friend had a 5.3 in his 1500 pickup and it was around 18 to 20 on the highway

no real troubles with any of them that i am aware of, trannies, transfer cases, etc..... seemed fine
