While trying to get my tach. working I found a small boken cable below the main cable. This small 4 inch braided wire cable was replaced but then the tach. appeared to be trying to run in reverse. The 1972 4000 was converted from a genny to an alt. system. Would that make a differnce? Is there a cable reversing part that I am missing?

It sounds to me like you're describing the tach drive setup in the block, below the oil filter, which is not the thousand series' original drive. They were originally driven by the generator, which turns in the opposite direction of the one you have. If you have the tractor's original instrument cluster, the tach will turn clockwise. This cluster will not work with the cam driven tach drive which turns counterclockwise.... You need the post '76 cluster which will also include changing the temperature sender as they work on different values.... And to change the sender also requires redrilling the sender hole in the head to a larger size.... I've done it. I know.

Maybe the tach is really supposed to be the speedometer? I recall seeing them with identical instrument panels, only reverse indications. What year is she?

Its a 1972 deisel three cylinders. It was converted to use an altenator and the original generator was removed.

I just got done working on a 4000 gas and that had an alternator with tac drive. Regardless if it has a generator or alt i think they would spin the same way. If you think you may be missing a part you can seach new hollands part catalog online by going to cnh.com then click on new holland then parts and service then on search for parts.
