Trying to bring back to life this engine that has been sitting in a barn for many years. I removed the head to check the cylinder walls for wear and carbon build up. The walls looked real good-no ridge on top of the walls at all. The question I have is: on the #2 & 3 pistons there is a small area of combustion damage. The #1 & 4 pistons look good. No carbon build up on the pistons or the head. Looking for suggestions for possible causes of the piston damage. This is a gas engine.

The two middle holes on an inline engine don't get cooled as well as those on the end. This can lead to detonation. Gasoline should BURN in the combustion chamber, a very rapid burn. When the fuel air mixture actually explodes uncontrolled (detonates) engine damage results.
