third party image

The picture is of the left side brake drum on my ford 3600. I have had that gear puller on it for days now.

I have sprayed tons of WD and PB on the area where the axel hub and drum come together. I have tapped on it with a small hammer, I have beat on it real hard with my 4lb hammer, i finally tried heating the hub, no help. I tried heating the drum between the wheel studs, still no help.

The gear puller is as tight as i can make it go with a 14" cresent wrench. I finally welded some tabs on the end of each puller arm and and beat them with the 4lb until they were mushroomed out. Drum didn't budge an inch.

I made sure that the brake pads were adjusted all the way in and called the local dealership and got no advise other than what I was already doing.

HELP!!, The tractor has basically no brakes now, I need to get that drum off. This is the first brake drum I have ever tried to remove and it has me beat up to this point.

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Gosh we sure are problem solvers...(in our heads that is).

Just checked the books, didn't see any "set" screws of anything else that retains the drum. that's a good thing.

heat is a good thing to use....however, there is a posibility of...A), warping or taking the temper out of the brake drum. and B) if heating the the Axle, (posted above), you may roast the seal, (say..Ne-O-prene). But, that may be what your trying to get to in the first place.

I do like the idea of grinding off the head of the retaainers (on the backside)...how come I never thought of that?...must be the caveman in me....

be careful w/the torch, have your fire extinguisher close by...sl

Wow, all great ideas and just the stuff I was looking for. I will be trying all or some of them this weekend until I get that drum off.

The brake shoes are adjusted completely away from the drum and I don't know what an axel nut is but the picture is as I found the drum and hub when I removed the wheel.

I had heated the drum but now I believe that I had not heated it nearly enough. I also believe that the puller just isn't helping so I'm going to take that off, get some good heat going and start pounding on that sucker till I win. yes I will put back the wheel nuts with some clearance. If I need to I also will drill a few holes in there for lub, that sounds like a good idea, but after I take out some frustration on the face of that feller.

Thanks again a bunch and when I get it off I will post a picture and discription of how it went. Hopefully that post will be on Monday.....

And, just where is the axle nut? HMMM?? It should have been screwed onto the axle, backwards, before all this heating and beating has gone on. You might play heck getting that nut to go back on now! And, using a large flat punch between the wheel bolts will help, too! and this using the drum puller! By: OFM (Old Ford Mechanic)

Most of the Ford tractors have brake systems like Ford cars and Trucks. If it's the brake shoes holdding it on you can grind the heads off of the retaining rods on the back of the backing plate and pull shoes and all. They are small and round and you can replace them.I had to do it with a car that the brakes wore so bad and had been adjusted until the adjuster hung and would not screw in.

This is probably not the case but I had an older model International truck (14' flat bed ) that we tried for several days to remove a hub. No luck. Tried everything. One day an older gentleman stopped by and asked if we had removed the set screws? Wound up being two set screws, countersunk and covered with rust and crude, 180 degrees apart, between the lug bolts. Removed the screws and the hub fell off. Dunno - might look.

Whoa whoa whoa...doesn't that have an adjuster on it? Have you backed it off? If that drum is worn with a grove in it and the brake bands are in the groove,it's not going to come off NO HOW. If it's like the older Fords there should be a plug like the band brakes on a car or pickup. Take it out and back off the adjuster.

I take a piece of round stock abput 6" to 8" long to hit & hold between the studs & just keep hitting .

You're going about that all wrong.

Get that puller off and instead just smack the drum face with a big hammer being very careful not to hit the studs. Don't be bashful. Hit it!

That drum will jump right off of there.

The puller is just making things worse because it is putting the lip of the drum in a bind against the hub.

Find a can of Kroil.Wd is useless on tough jobs like this.I have my doubts about Pb,Sprayed some on a problem. In the time it took me to get a wrench, the PB evaporated. The drum is rusted tight to the hub. This happens to car and truck wheels often. When you get it off put some grease on the area that was stuck.Next time you heat it turn the drum and apply candle wax to the joint between the hub and drum. The puller wont help much here , the drum will just flex.Put some lug nuts back on if you keep using that puller.

Don't force it just get a bigger hammer. I had the same problem on an old Studebaker with the rear hub on a tapered axle. A neighbor brought his eight pound hammer and one good square strike and the puller, drum and hammer flew about ten feet across the driveway. Put on the lug nuts!!

Heat it, then beat it, then beat it, then heat it, then beat it and beat it and beat it some more. Then heat it again. Then beat it again, and again, and again, then heat it and beat it again .....

Most of us have been there, not fun at all.

God luck.

Oh, I forgot, if you can get a big lever in any where pry it also while heating it, and beating it, and beating it :)

I notice that you don't have some nuts on the studs to keep the drum from leaving the country when it comes off. Put at least half of the back on leave about 1/8 clearance. If you proceed like you are then when it does come off it could take anything in its way with it including your head.
Does the drum turn freely if not it may be stuck to the shoes I had a case LA like that it took a huge puller and torch and a sledge to get it off.

If you have a compressor and an air chisel with a hammer head bit then put in your ear plugs and have at it. Remove the puller and keep hitting it between the studs and the vibration will usually rattle it free. You should be able to hear the sound change pitch when it starts to come loose. You can put the lugs back on a few threads if your afraid of damaging the studs. HTH Jf

KY Farm,
If I may suggest, on the outside of EACH wheel stud, drill a small hole so your penetrant can get to the face of the hub under that part of the brake drum. heat and spray, let cool and spray some more. May take several attemps to get it complety behind the drum. Of course a little hammer bang every now and then wont hurt either. This might just do it. Good Luck, jackie

Get you garden hose ready. Heat the drum close to the axle as hot as you can get it, preferably cherry red, then turn the hose on it full blast. the sudden contraction from the expansion(heat) will usually break them free. Then you can spray"MOVEIT" or penetrating oil and pull the drum. Like the other post, I never seen one break from heating and cooling and some solid pounding shouldn't hurt it either

My past experiences, the puller won't do you much good. Take it off and beat on the brake drum itself. The drum is stuck around the axle. You can heat it around that area, and beat on the drum itself, this will usually make it flex enough to start coming off. (I've beat on them before with a 10 pound sledge, out of just being madder than hell)Never broke a drum yet, but not saying it won't happen. This usually works for me.
