My Dad is thinking of selling one of our farmall 140s with a set of cultivators. They are both in fairly good condition sheet metal wise (Thay have their dings, but no rust that I remember seeing). One has a stronger running engine, but has had the front axle welded (so it cannot be adjusted) and the other has a good front axle, but has a little weaker of an engine (it could be just timing, I dont know for sure). Both of them will jump out of 4th with a load when going down a hill. They have a couple little leaks here and there. The one that has the good front axle and weaker egine has good brakes while the other needs a new set of brakes in it. What do you all think these are worth? Thanks

As stated, they will bring a good price in the right market. I would look into advertising in a publication or website that targets small to medium sized organic producers.

Hurst,

I think if you can get anything over $2,000 with your very honest assessment of their condition...you'd better grab it. Here in Greenup County, KY. most of the tobacco farmers quit and if the cultivating tractors aren't collecting dust...they went to the sales. I bought 3 Farmall's last spring...a Cub and two Super A's....one SA had a mower on it, the other two had cultivators and side dresser. These were all nice machines....well cared for, good rubber, 2 had been repainted. I gave $1000 for the Cub, $1500 for the SA with side dresser/cultivators and $2100 for the SA with belly mower. I wouldn't turn my hand one way or the other for a 140 or a SA...whichever was in better condition would be the determining factor. I hope you get all you can.

Your tractor is a tractor that sells well in a market that wants them. we go to an auction every year about three hours from home where they bring 4K to 5K depending on condition every year... then other auctions in other areas they might bring 1 to 2 K... it all depends on what the area is.. i would say 2 to 3 would be a safe bet to reserve them at. my 2 cents worth... theose tractors are great when used for what they were intended for... just have to market them to people that use them for that... BTW the high selling auction is in tobacco areas

This is tobacco country, but we stopped growing it with the buy out, but they spent all their years as cultivating tractors, transplanting, pulling wagons of tobacco, and then in the hay fields some. We just don't need both of them. I told him around 3000-3250 would be a fair price (of course we would change all the fluids before selling and clean them up). We are selling them to a guy that we have known for a while and gets hay from us every once in a while (we give him old bluegrass bales and horse manure bales).

you said you'd change the fluids before selling. when i'm looking at a tractor and i find brand new fluids in it i can't help but wonder if they're trying to hide something like leaks or cracks in the block or head. just a thought, you do what you think best. if the fluids in it look used but not filthy or sludgy, and is free of water...that's a good selling point in my book. i'd rather you just gave me the fluids and i'd change it later.

Thanks for that tip. I would have to check with the man that wants to buy one of them to see if he wants that done. It sounds like it is better to let him look at them used.

I have no clue about the price, but in my opinion, they will be about the same price. While one has a bad front end and brakes and the other less horsepower and both a few leaks, one shouldn"t be more expensive than the other.

I should also add that they are late models with key starts, converted to 12 volts, tires are not very good, but still have some life left. Both have 1 set of rear weights. The steering in both is a little loose (about 1/8 of a turn of slop in them). They do not have fast hitch, just the lift on the back and the drawbar. Also, what would it be worth if I put the good axle on the one with the good engine?

$3K would be absolute tops in my area for either one. Swapping parts around probably will reduce the value of one tractor while enhancing the other. The overall value of both combined will remain unchanged.
