A friend of mine has a Dodge 3/4 ton pickup with the V-10 gas motor and he has lots of power... but he gets horrible mileage. Does anyone know if there's a chip he can buy or some other modification he can make to get this engine to produce better MPGs?

I think that motor gets 10MPG highway and 9MPG city. OUCH!!!!! !!!!! The only way I can think of is to sell the truck or put the V8 in it. The V8 only gets 14MPG I think. I dont know if there is fuel economy chip, dont even know if it would work. Chrysler and GM and Ford tryed to cater to the macho big truck market with the gas sucking motors more power is what all guys want, only when gas is $1.25/gallon. Now the big 3 are crying cause they cant sell the big trucks.

I have had a few of them over the years, good engine, good power, shame the quit making it. If he is looking for fuel economy, he has the wrong engine.

i had a 96 unit with the V-10 extended cab long box, automatic high rearend. Simply loved that unit. Talk about pull anything if you got the traction. It was best milage pickup I ever owned. It would get 13 in normal no pull driving ususally. Lost it to fire, now have unit with the Hemi,no comparison.

Took my '93 Dakota 4x4 auto 318 V/8 to Richmond, VA from Colo. during the big midwest blizzard right before Christmas in '04. Used 4 wheel drive a lot when eastbound thru Illinois and Kentucky (Indiana was shut down). Came back loaded to the gills; bed and topper maxed out and a loaded hitch rack. Drove as hard as the roads and the law would allow. Overall mileage was 17.4. Picture was taken in Caņon City, Colo on the way back in Jan. 05.

Max out the pressure in your tires and open up the factory air inlet to your air filter.

Get a diesel. Surprisingly those V10's don't have as much pulling power as you would think they should. Not short on power but not an abundance. And very thirsty when working.

i'll keep the v-10 about the same horse power and power curve as a deisel but $5,000. cheaper buy-in and cheaper to fix.. you wish more pore change gear ratio in the axle

sodly i also run a dodge v-10 a 1999 i have a friend that build race engines and works on my truck i asked that same question of him...answer burn 94 octain... more power no spark knock 2-3 more miles per gal. thats about 35gal tankx3 more miles= about 105 more miles per tank in the long run i save money and i have fewer problems ( for a load i pull a 20 foot cattle goose or a 20k flat bed so i do work it some and still get better milage. better gas =better milage at a cheap price.. just my nickles worth doug you can see the diff. in two tanks

Unless you have had your friend work on your engine, higher compression or advancing the spark, your math is a bit fuzzy. Higher octane gas doesn"t produce more power unless your computer is retarding ignition advance on a lower octane.

Yes..... that's true. But, some engines, and mabey this is one, will retard the timing when they start to ping on low octane gas. Put higher octane in, timing advances back up, power and mileage increase.... It's hard to bite the bullet and buy the more expensive gas, but in some rare situations, it does pay.
The higher octane gas does have a lower energy value, but the engine is getting more from it....
