What is the longest distance you have ever driven a tractor? I went 20 miles once.

Drove a 1952 8N 35 miles home from repair shop when I lived in ND in 80's.

Last weekend drove my 1949 Farmall H with loader and tire chains 26 miles (13 miles each way) in a blizzard to rescue the in-laws who had no power for 2 days. Got their 4x4 truck plowed out of shed then drove them to a warm house in the local town then back to my tractor for the ride home (brrr). Had to plow 3/4 mile of gravel road to get to the highway as plows were not out due to continued drifting. Won't do that again...looking for a cab tractor for next year. :-)

I was one of those guys that drove my tractor to Washington DC. Left from Topeka, Kansas. 1600 miles in 16 days. There was about 100 tractors in our tractorcaid. Also support vehicles for fuel and food. I drove a 4320 John Deere and pulled a 4WD pickup with a camper on the back so I would have a place to sleep.

Speaking of long distance tractor driving do you guys remember the farm strike of 77 and 78 when farmers drove tractors to washington DC,,I think it was our local farmers union that drove a 806 ih from out here in nw nd to dc ----and back. I asked one guy who drove it part of the way about it and one thing he said was it was winter and the pavement was cold and there was very little tire ware which i was very surprised at.But o god, What a way to spend the winter.

M Farmall with a mounted 2 row picker 170 miles. 2 weeks later drove a IH 915 the same. Seemed like a long trip in the combine at 12 mph.

Great pictures 1206, gotta love those old molines. Drove a A4t-1600 about 70 miles with 5th gear out it only rolled along about 10 mph. Drove a 900 versatile about 80 miles, a jd 6600 150 miles, 4-150 90 miles, another 1600 90 miles and a few G1000's around 70 miles. They all made it home, and it seems if they make the run home they are gonna be alright. We currently have hay ground around 12 miles from home and haul a stack of 20 bales with tractor and stack mover. That land alone puts on 850 miles on the tractor and we still have another 70 stacks within 5 miles of home to move. Tires do wear down but you have to do a lot of roading on pave ment, and gravel really is not too bad. Also neighbor drove a IH rotary around 250 miles home, i guess hour wise its no different than running in the field in one day just going faster.

I forgot about the Massey Harris my buddy bought it has a huge backhoe off a JD track layer and about 800 lbs of cement up front. As you know these tractors have the worst brakes in the tractor world and when they are nothing better than oil bath they don't work that good. we live in the foothills so the road home was full of small steep hills. We put in 5 gallons of gas that should make it home about 4 miles. what we didn't know was that the pickup on the Massey was in the front of the tank and had a small tube sticking up into the tank. That 5 gallons was great when going down hill or on level ground but the first big hill and it left me out in the cold with no engine no brakes and nothing left to pray for. I got it back to a level spot where we took another road home not over the big hill around it. Well it had a small steep hill which we didn't make it up, same thin back down run off into ditch get something to pull it out get more gas and off we go again. made the next few hills OK but when pulling the last hill into the farm ran out of gas again. Like one said that is a long long trip on a tractor. Next time I'll trailer it. also found out that they have a very fast road gear never did get to that because the steering was not good enough to keep it on the road in third gear.
Walt
home at last and happy. PS its almost 70 out here.

One other time sticks in my mind too. It wasn't but about twenty miles of driving, but what a drive. My cousin and I went to Archbold (150 miles) with a half ton pickup and single axle trailer to get an Oliver 88 and mounted picker. We found out quick it wouldn't fit with the picker on it. We took it off, loaded the tractor and got about 30 miles from home. Blew a tire, put the spare on and made it another 10. By now it was dark,so we unloaded, left the trailer in a cemetary and I drove with no fenders or lights with him tight bahind me in a 66 Chevy pickup. We had to go down about a half mile long hill in to the south side of Ionia,no passing lane,we had cars lined up half way to I96. How in the world we made it home 20 miles in the dark without being arrested or killed,I still haven't figured out. Ah..to be young and fearless again.

Not too far but I would drive a tractor from Saskatchewan to Victoria B.C. if I had the chance. The tractor would have to have a road gear in it.

Have Driven My 1940 Massey Super 101 And My 1946 Minny R. The Massey Could Outrun Almost Anyone If It Was For Speed.

As I said earlier about 20 miles took all day on my Case LA with no 4th gear inn it. I have another one hear for parts someday I'm going to see if the 4th gear will fit but one is 45 and the other is a 48 they made a lot of changes in 48.

Walt: If you ever decide to do the change, let me know and I'll come over from Montana. I have an aunt and uncle in Corvallis I can visit and help you. I've worked on LA rear ends a few times.
It might be simpler to change the whole rear end.

Last year I drove a D19 Allis 135 miles one day with the road's we took and the area's we covered from Sioux City to Fort Dodge Iowa.
This included the ride to dinner and the motel.

Tire wear is minimal I traveled 400 miles before the little knob's became mostly worn off.
Now pulling 600 bushel wagon's 3 miles on concrete road to market is another thing that will wear the tire much more.

In 1971 I drove a 960 Case combine 165 miles on the trans Canada Highway (No. 1) and combined 20 acres of wheat with it before I went to bed. don't recall what I did the next day.
