I have an Oliver 880 and it will start and run fine for about ten seconds and then stall. I've replaced the points, rebuilt the carburetor, and taken out the filter and cleaned it at the carburetor with no luck fixing the problem. I had done some research on the internet and found that debris could be clogging the fuel filter, then when the engine stalls, the backpressure forces the debris back up into the tank allowing fuel to flow again for a little bit to staret it again for about ten seconds. Has anyone out there ran into this problem and if so, what was your solution?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to try to clean the carb again. All symptoms point to the carb itself so it's worth a try even though I've cleaned it twice already. Maybe the third time will be the charm. I'll let you know if it solves the problem.
Thanks for all the advice.

Lynn, i"ve had the same problem with my 1650 since last summer. I"ve done almsot everything to it. I"m going to try placing a small tube ove the end of the sediment bowl and see if that will help.

Probably got rust or dirt inthe tank plugging the hole and just is running out of fuel put a little stand pipe in there and more than likely problem will be solved If it were me I would not get rid of that inline fuel filter been running them for fifteen years on all of are old gassers just change the little dudes every so often it keeps any thing that passes the sediment bowl out of the carb I like the little clear plastic ones you can see if that got gas in them.

If you remove the sediment bulb assembly from the tank, fit a small tube into the inlet, about an inch long. Plastic tubing works well. Keeps the bottom feeders in the tank from floating over the hole and plugging it.

Try it with the gas cap removed. If that fixes it, get a new cap.

First find whether it is short of fuel or spark when it stops. Go from there.

Yes you will have to clean the system from the tank down its not easy to get it all out but it has to be done.

Remove the aftermarket in line fuel filter. Replumb without it. See if that is your problem.

That's what I was going to ask, what fuel filter? If it's an auto parts store in line, there's your problem. They aren't made for a nonpressure line. Strange things happen, when I was a kid,Dad had a 66 that kept quitting, turned out there was a popcycle stick in the tank that had become saturated and was laying on the bottom of the tank and would float,so to speak, over the hole.

Randy, is that where you put all of your popsicle sticks when you were a kid? LOL. When I was a kid back in the 60's, I used to stuff sticks off the trees down the fill neck of the fuel oil tanks in the basement. When our home heating oil supplier came to fill the tanks in the fall, he flipped the little cover open on the pipe on the side of the house and found it to be packed full of twigs from my summer escapades. Oh to be young again!

Hey,this is getting off subject, but the septic system in this house had given us fits for YEARS. I grew up here and don't remember it ever being right. Six or seven years ago I couldn't take it anymore. Had a new tank, drainfield, everything put in. STILL didn't work. Took it apart and jammed a drain snake up the pipe under the house, finally hooked a PLASTIC BASEBALL BAT that had been dropped down the vent up the side of the house! Ain't that a kick in the seat...and the wallet.
