Am I the only one left in the world with dial up? It is so stinking SLOW. Would like to go to something faster but funds are limited right now and can't afford $40 to $70 per month. Searching for ads for machinery or parts is very frustrating. Is it possible to hook computer to cell phone, and would it be any faster? I'm open to any ideas. Chris

Do not let People PC DOT COM tempt you, NOT a single person speeks english, and you will never get back any money they owe you. They use the free disk for a draw you in deal. The problem is they send you three and you must return the other two, pay postage and certified mail I would asume they will never get the disks back in the time frame allowed. and a whole lot of bs.

I purchased their high speed dial up, then they asked if i could choose no charge dial up phone line town location. I sure could except by not speeking English they hooked me to a town 80 miles away. They got the first letter of the town ok, after that wow--no idea of the term english.

I did screw up by not checking my debit card statment for eight months. I do not use it ever. They could only refund the last month, and I had absolutly no way of ever using their service. So far I just complain, and yea, complain more.

I have worked for my hometown telephone company since Al Gore invented the internet and had to fix all the dialup internet problems. VBG

Dialup internet speed can be affected:

Our company will not hookup a customer's computer to a cable modem if it's running Windows 95. Too old. RAM memory is probably the most important item to affects processing. Too little ram forces the processor to use the hard drive as virtual memory. Time is wasted accessing the HD to display the web page. For Windows XP minimun is 256 meg of RAM. Thats just to run XP. Startup IE and you need about 350 meg. Add the other software that adds little processes at startup and it's up 480 meg. XP needs 512 meg to run effectively. The new Vista may need about 1 gigabyte. Previous versions of MS operating software can be run on 256 meg. Another thing on the computer to look at is the anti-virus software. The new anti-virus software checks every keystroke typed and every data bit on the website that is downloaded. I use AVG because it's simple and free. I think the site is at WWW.avg.com.

If you are using the only phone line in the house, then remove them one at time to see if the download time improves. Same thing if you have a second line for internet dialup service.

The next thing to do call the telephone company and have the line checked or ask for a dailup internet phone line. Sometimes the telephone company uses line concentrators which combines 2 phone lines unto a 1 cable pair. Cuts the connection speed in half. Most phone lines will run at the 50k connection speed or better depending on how far you are from the telephone company's office.

I am presently away from home for a month and in order to get the internet with my laptop I use my cell phone with Alltel. It costs $25 a month and does not use any of your minutes. It is available anywhere you have service and is usually faster than dial up. If you are out of the Alltel area it will go to either Sprint or Verizon depending where you are, and I found out that when it was on Sprint one time it was much slower. Overall, I am quite pleased with it.

I"m still on dial-up, where I"m at there are 3 hi-speed options: 1) phone line DSL -- but they say I"m two miles too far from town for that.
2) wireless via a local tv services -- but they can"t get a signal back through the neighbor"s grove.
3) satellite internet -- but there"s no local dealer/reseller in this area to install it (and they tell me I can"t install a transmitter dish unless I get a special license from the FCC).

So I"m on dialup.

I flush my browser cache regularly, use opera, don"t have even flash installed, and only turn on images when I"m on a page I need it (like for radar). It works for me, and I don"t do a lot of napping in front of a computer.

I"m on dial up mainly because I"m cheap. Also because theres no suitable plan in my area for DSL or other stuff.

Got 2 computers, the DW and mine. On mine I have unchecked or disabled Active X. Loads faster. I know, can"t get security patches without active X. I also unchecked JAVA Scripts. Works great and faster yet. When I hit a site that requires Scripts, and thats not often, the computer tells me and then I turn it on. I also unchecked the graphics. Loads even faster yet. On threads where a picture is provided and I want to see it, I right click the mouse, click on show picture and the picture loads.

I secure my computer with Spybot, Ad Aware, AVG and Zone Alarm. Having no problems at all.

Your results may vary.

They still offer dial-up? Check your cable TV company. If you use cable see if the offer a package deal.

I have WildBlue Satellite service it sure made a difference. I got it install free and $49 a month I also kept my AOL for $9.95 a month after i dropped the second line for the computer and rearranged my Qwest service and added 2 cell phones instead of 1 I am still paying about the same. I found a $14.95 charge on my phone that was slammed in that realy helped. I suggest that you call your phone company and talk to them they have packages now that will save you a bundle.

I don't know if any of you have Qwest in your area but i got a add in the mail from Qwest for high speed internet 26.00 per mounth for life but you have to rent or buy a modem 5.00 a mounth or buy it for 60.00 . I pay 18.00 now for dial up so 9.00 more would not be to bad.

By accident, I discovered that if I set my browser log-on to a blank page, everything seems to load and move faster. Once the browser loads, all you have to do it hit your bookmarks or type in a web address and go. Maybe all the stuff they put on MSN, MSNBC, USAToday, etc. clogs up your memory capacity. I now have satellite internet and the blank homepage also seems to work better here too.

I have WildBlue - about $200 up front for equipment and $50/month. When I add up what I was paying for dial-up and a second phone line, that monthly is not too bad.

Hope this helps.

Some of us are banging around on 4-cyl instead of 16 and see a shorted plug quicker. Cleaning "cache" or on/offline files and setting up the cp to not accept active X (running programs)unless asked to do so provides some layer. What I mean is the value of faster and quicker can sometimes blind one to the sinister programs and elaborate bs you need not see anyway.Since you"re running on on 16 it"s but a stumble but the garbage works in. It must be filtered or you intake more.

I put my book marks into an HTML page, which is how netscape did it in the past. Ocasionally I update those with an HTML editor, but I use that for my home page. Its local, no trash to download.

Something you might check is memory. I have broadband but over the past year or so I noticed it was taking forever to load a page. I also began to notice the disk lamp was on almost steady. The system was using huge amounts of virtual memory which is slower than RAM. I added a half gig stick and now the pages switch like flipping a book.
Worked for me.

I still have dial service. It was really slow
sometimes so I started removing any extra phones
from the line. The phone in the basement seemed
to really change my speed. Works good now and I
hooked up the phones again one at a time except
for the basement and still going well. Might be
worth a try.

When I had dial up and an old 486 computer, there was something I did to have just text come over the computer without the graphics.
Made it a lot faster until I found what I was looking for and then I turned on the graphics again. I cant remember how I did it. When I had that old I got quite handy inside it because I had to be or get driven nuts (still got driven nuts)

All I can tell you is that if you do ANYTHING online and want to do more, broadband is the only way to go. To me the cost has been well worth it.

I still have dial up. No cable out here and I don't want a high monthly payment for a dish.

Mine sometimes isn't too bad. All the pop ups and ads and extra bull crap people add to ebay ads really slow it down. This site seems to work about the best. Must be the outdated system works better with dial up.

no, you are not the only one with SLOW dial up. mine is so slow that i can go to sleep waiting for it to connect. sometimes the homepage takes 5-9 minutes to connect and download. i think it"s the server problem, not the computer. i heard DSL is quicker, but not offered in my area yet. i always thought the whole advantage to computers was that they were fast, but that does not seem to be the case with mine.
