I have welded one that cracked the full width and used 7018 electrode. Grooved the joint so the weld was full penetration and it has lasted over 6 years now. I also use the same electrode on areas that start showing wear and have used it also on areas that wore thru. It wears well as just about the rest of the moldboard.

I don't know if they're a special steel or not. Sounds like they might be. I welded forged 3 pt. arms with 7018 and never had a problem. If you want something a little stronger you could go with a 8018 or higher rod. There are also specialty low hydrogen (xx18) rods with different alloys in the flux to make them tougher. Another option would be a 309 stainless rod. Talk to a bigger welding supply dealer. They might even have specialty rods specifically for plows. Dave

Why weld a plough moldboard instead of replacing it? The repair costs nearly the price of a new piece plus your time. And the end result is an old used moldboard that has been repaired with no guarantee of lasting. It has already broke once, it could happen again.

I would agree with you but this moldboard is only about 3 years old, and has probably only 20 acres on it. It was almost $100 new then. Actually it is only cracked about 3", don't want it to go any further.

Thanks Bemhoff

With a gas welder do not preheat and set welder real low then do a series of tac welding. I have patched many of moldboards that way and have not had one fail yet.

I've done it before but its not easy. You need to clean them up real good and grind a V in the area. I use ni-rod and it worked well did one about 15 years ago and its still holding

Thanks for the reply, What exactly is ni-rod? Is it a high nickel welding rod. Also Is this for gas of arc welding?

Yep nickel rod, its tough stuff and doesn't grind well after welding. And yes its for arc welding and cost about a buck a rod in 1/8 so it can get hard on the back pocket if you use much of it but its also very strong and will hold better then most other rod like 7018 or 7014 or 611 etc. I have 3 point arms that I have welded up with the stuff and they are still holding after 10 years of ruff work.

Thanks for the info. Will I have to do any pre-heating or anything like that?

No preheating should not be needed on a plow. Or at least I have never done so and it has worked well for me.
