SM engine oils

I read a thread on an antique car site recently about SM engine oil not being suitable for older engines. The thread told about zinc being removed from SM grade oil. Zinc is necessary for proper lubrication of the camshaft and flat hydraulic and solid lifters. New cars use roller lifters and don't need zinc. The advice was to use diesel oil which still has zinc. No mention was made about whether synthetic oil has zinc or not. Has anyone heard anything about this? IS there any validity to this or is it just something else to worry about? Thanks..... P

For my engines that demand SJ oil, they are going to get either SJ or Ford's synthetic blend that says it meets Ford's standards (and that will be a Ford engine). Diesel oils still have a full dose of the ZDDP additive because many diesel pumps have sliding parts like vintage engine cam followers.
