Sprinkler Tire Question

Heard a guy the other day claiming the tractor tread on the tires on a sprinkler tower must be oriented the proper way.

I think he said the tread V should point out on both wheels.

I irrigated for 14 years and never noticed any problems one way or another... Top speed on a span must not be over 2 miles per hour.

Does anyone else think it matters? What is the difference?

Thanks,
Howard

I don't suppose it makes a difference as long as they are pointing opposite directions. Assuming that the job is being done on a 75 degree sunny day in a dry field before the crop is planted, (don't laugh Allen, it happened once) and I had the choice I would point them in not out. This is because the torque of the tower, if they have any, would put more load on the back tire of the tower so it would do more work so you would want it to clean more than the other.

When you're changin' a tire or gearbox in the middle of a hot muggy cornfield in the middle of August, who really gives a damn? :>)

guys around here just put one on forwards and one on backwards per set of stilts. I don't suppose it really matters.

Would that not be so you have equal traction, whether you need to advance the towers, or back them up?
