High mileage engine oil-

Just wondering on what the difference is between "formulated for high mileage engines" oil and just regular oil? I know some oil manufacturers make oils to use in cars/trucks with over 100,000-120,000 miles.

Is this "high-mileage oil" worth buying? Or is it a ploy to make more money...

I have a 1987 Ford Ranger out back, 2.9 V6, 5 speed. The original engine went 461,000 miles without ever being opened up. I changed the oil religiously every 5,000 miles using $2.00 oil filters and whatever oil I could buy for less than $10.00 a case. You decide.

120,000 is high mileage ? These days I'd think that 250,000 to 300,000 would be getting there.

Oil is cheap. Check it often. Change it regularly.

The main difference in "high-mileage" oils is supposed to be a formula that will help your aging engine seals from drying out.

Looking at the MSDS for high mileage and plain oil, it looks like the high mileage oil is thicker, e.g. higher viscosity so it stays in wider bearing gaps and worn seals better. The same thing as most aftermarket oil additives like STP, Lucas, etc.

wouldn't that be the same if you were, say, to move up from 10w-30 to 10w-40? I oftentimes question what oil additives really do inside the engine

Probably more like going from 10W30 to 15W40 or 15W50.
