I've never had the luxury of seeing a Charlynn power steering unit up close. In the case of an M, or anything similar, does the housing mount to anything or does it just float and hang by the shaft on each end? Does the torque of the unit not make it tend to rotate and pull on the hoses?

The arrow is pointing to the special adapter you need to mount on an H:

On my '51 M it bolts to the light bar,two hoses lay on top of gas tank ,each going down past the guages..... looks like s**t..... .

Looks to me like it could go under the hood in front of the guages..... I will either try to move mine there or move the hoses straight dowm behind the tank.....make a metal top shield to partly hide the unit.....

I would say yours is a BEHLEN as the CHAR-LYNN goes under the hood and you dont see anything

Don, you must have the Behlen power steering, not Charlynn. All of the Charlynn units I have ever seen install under the hood.

Here's a picture of the one I put on my H.

The torque motor on your M would look the same with the exception that it bolts directly to the special guage braket instead of using the angled donut adaptor.

For what it is worth, that Charlynn torque motor and special bracket is now being manufactured again. The torque motor is a wee bit different, and I think it requires a little different style of hoses, but should still be a direct replacement for the original. They are being made by the Charlynn/Eaton corp.

Hi. Look up Baum Hydraulics. They list them in the catalog.
