After lots of snow-melt and a thunderstorm around noon today, this is what it looks like around my place.

This is at the bridge half-way up my driveway.

Same bridge.

Down the road about a mile from my place.

Down the road a little further.

Another view of the bridge...all that water's trying to get through at once.

hey in to deep - I used to work for the State D.O.T. here in Ma. - We used to get bags of old cement from a building supply and put them around the base of a bridge for that problem. Just pile them against the bridge wall, stab them with a screwdriver a few times = after the water gets to it, it will become hard as a rock.
Good Luck

John,

That must have been a while ago, these days the MassDEP would have your you-nuts-what in a sling for that sort of thing :)

Well, actually, they would have had your n_ts in a sling back before Gov. Romney gutted their budget and there were actually people who worked at MassDEP.

Looks like rocks are few and far between around your part of the country.
Might check with your local redi mix company, I'm sure they will have some rip rap they wouldn't mind getting rid of.

Hi;
This is the water flowing through the rocks just above the Cenarth Bridge. When the river is in full flood the water level would be 10 feet above the rock I was standing on when I took this photo!
Cheers David

Hi In too deep;
Sorry to see that its rather wet in your part of the World. Hope it doesnt wash away too much soil.
This is Cenarth bridge near here. Built a couple of hundred of years ago over Teifi river which flash floods several times each winter.
Those HOLES aint for decoration, they are there to let excess water flow through when the river is in full flood and stops the water backing up against the bridge piers.
Cheers David

Boy, I wish that was good bass fishing! I'd never have to leave the house! : ) Unfortunately, that waterway is pretty much dry the rest of the year. Do you do any bass fishing Glennster?

Good example of overland channelized flow. Good thing that bridge had flared wingwalls or the water would have been higher than that w/ even worse soil erosion, which I'm sure will be bad enough the way it is. Check all the drains you can think of and clean out the debris and corn stalks.

That bridge used to be two 4 ft. culverts. They washed out about 10 or so years ago and we had this bridge built. Only problem is, the waterway isn't aimed perpendicular to the bridge, and it doen't flow straight through, so the soil tends to wash out around the footings on one side. After the water recedes, dad and I will have to take a look and see what needs to be done. Could I perhaps get some advice when the time comes? You'd be the guy to talk to : )

Well see you could have also picked up a boat when you where down here. I have 3 of them on the place, LOL. Back when I worked in the area building roads for the state they would line the banks of the bridges with bog rock and that stops the soil from going bye bye. If you could get hold of some good size rock you could line that area and stop or slow down the problem. Shoot bring a truck down and if you pay for the gas I'll load up as many as you can haul since I have tons and tons of rock here.

Yeah we were supposed to get some rip-rap rocks dumped down under the bridge but it never happened. I bet now it'll be necessary. I dunno though, I think I can buy rocks cheaper than it would be to drive down there! $2.49/gal. today. Although I AM looking for an excuse for another visit. ; )

Well see you could come down and get some rocks and tell people they are real Ozark mountian cave rocks and you would be telling the truth. Yep some of the rocks I have laying around came from a spring/cave I am opening up.
