Saw 2001 Chevy 2500 HD on a used lot today. The truck is 4 door extended cab with Fwd,Duramax diesel with Allison transmisson and asking $22000.00.I drove the truck and it performed well. However a "low coolant" warning light did appear during the drive but,the engine temp gage stayed within the normal range for the rest of the test drive.I mentioned this to the dealer and he said it had a sensor that needed replacing. The truck is very clean and has a new set of tires on it.It also has a hidaway ball installed for a gooseneck.I'm sure the dealer would address the problem with the warning light. Also the truck is showing 123.000 miles.Without the Dodge and Ford fans bashing the Chevy i would like some opinions on this truck and the asking price please.I know the Dodge and Fords are good trucks with good engines but,i just need some honest answers on this truck. THANKS.

You can get newer year and much less miles in the same truck for that kind of money. Run. Tom

I have access to manheim.com, they are the largest auto auction company in the US.

This is what a 2001 EXT Cab LT 6.6L Diesel / Allison is going for:

01/23/07 $15,000 124,821

01/18/07 $13,000 156,315

01/09/07 $16,900 126,946

12/07/06 $17,000 102,856

10/24/06 $9,400 185,996

09/19/06 $16,000 111,194

These are national wholesales prices.

As the others have said I think the price is a little bit high. I took a quick look at the wholesale prices for a 2003 / 2004 and they at about what they are trying to sell a 2001 for.

dhermesc is right- at least 6K too high. Go to Ritchie Bros. Auction and yoder & frey auction sites sites & look at auction results Reg. is free but requires you to make up a name & password. Such inside knowledge is well worth the effort. Just returned from Ritchie Florida auction - such a truck there would probably brought no more than $12k. I bought a 2000 freightliner FL80 single axle dump with NEW 16' low-side bed & new cylinders, pump, lines & controls (had been a van tk), loaded my Suburu In it & drove 800 miles home- $20,000, for comparison. I may have paid too much.

I`m a ford truck guy by nature, I own an 01 F350 and love it. but..... I have had the chance to start diagnosing and repairing these allison transmissions, so I`ve gotten a fair amount of seat time in the 2500 and 3500`s. What a great handling and driving truck. I had heard initially they had some cold start problems when the duramax first came out, but the ones I`ve been around fire right up even below zero. Nice power, quiet cab.
I think initially the chevy diesel thing was kinda looked at sideways by us Ford and Dodge guys, cause GM never really had a horse in the race. I think as time goes on and miles get put on these newer trucks the duramax`s will be as good as any. As for what to pay and the miles on the truck, that`s up to you. Good luck, I sure wouldn`t mind owning one as my next truck

I"m not sure where you are located, but I sell Chevy and Buick in Mercersburg, Pa. I have a 2004 3500 Duramax Dually Crew Cab with 70,000 miles in good shape. I could sell you that truck for $28,500. I personally have a 2002 Duramax ext. cab with 276,000 miles. It is an absolutely strong engine/transmission combination. I have had no problems at all since I bought the truck 2 yrs. ago.
In my opinion the price on the 2001 seems pretty high.
If I can be of help let me know.

Brian

'Bama,

Dealers consider anything over 100K as total junk and you can bet that they have no more than $1 invested in that truck.

You can almost buy a new one for that price.

I bought an 03 last year for 20,000.

Had 27,000 miles and was in perfect shape. I'd say it never pulled a trailer. Just some suburbanite's grocery getter.

Has the 8300 in it.

are you honestly going to pay 22,000 for a truck that has THAT MANY MILES?

As i stated that is his asking price.also i realize the mileage is high but we are talking about a 2001 model.I'm more interested in the "pros and cons" of the truck.I expect to pay more for a diesel engine. However if i decide to purchase this one it would be at a lesser price.Thank you for your reply.

The low coolant sensor is located in the over-flow reservoir. Probably just need to add some coolant.

As a guideline on the price, my 2001 K-3500 standard cab with 8.1 and 6 spd. listed for $29,000 brand new. The Duramax and Allison would have added about $5,000 to the sticker price for a total of $34,000. Don't know what the extended cab option added, but with 123,000 miles on the truck you are looking at, I think $22,000 is a bit high.

go online to Kelly blue book and see what it has for price. Don't waste time on carfax because they don't show warranty work or non-reported dealer work.

Kelly Blue Book is usually 20% - 30% high on everything from trade value to dealer price.

Had to laugh, a couple days ago a local dealer was offering 2006 Hemi Chargers for sale for just under 21,000. According to KBB the TRADE value of those cars was over $24,000.

A good idea might be to ask the dealer to talk to the previous owner,Than be careful the dealer doesn't give you a bogas name, you might have to play detective ,a lot of dealers don't want you to talk to the previous owner. just my .02 cents worth Jim in N M

Probably previous owners don't want to be bothered by a buyer / owner asking a lot of questions that they can't really answer. If the new owner has problems with the vehicle the previous owner doesn't want headache phone calls.
