Howdy,

Just curious if any other hay sellers are having problems moving their hay this year. This is the first time in 5 years that I haven't sold a single bale of my alfalfa at this time of year. Usually I'm working down to the last layers by now. Granted I've upped my price this year but still 3.00 for first cutting alfalfa/timothy and 4.00 for second cutting isn't that bad. Considering that fuel was up near 3.00 a gallon when we were putting this hay up how in the world can folks sell hay for 2.00 or less and straw for 1.75??? I just don't get it. I just wish I had enough to fool with hiring a truck. I'd just ship it to florida and forget all the cheapskates around here. Sorry for the rant.

We've had a colder than "normal" January here in the Mission Valley and a lot of the cow folks are looking for hay. I sold all my cow hay in large rounds for $70/T( since that's $10/T higher than normal cow hay, they screamed a bit) and I sold all my very nice 1st cutting grass in large rounds for $80/T to horse people. I wish I had some more, though dealing with some horse people can be frustrating.

I've not even had any lookers on small squares this year until today. He balked at $4.00 on 3rd cutting alfalfa/orchardgrass with an RFV of 155. Barn stored rounds are a different story. I've sold 970 of them and could have sold a thousand more if Id had them.

No problems here in the NW corner of the People's Republic of Connecticut. Made 8000 small squares and have sold/committed it all.

Getting $4.50 for 1st and $5.50 for 2nd at the barn.(Timothy/Orchard grass mix) Primarily horse customers.

Generally, hay is in short supply around here due to a wet '06.

A while back two fella's in Wisconsin were desperate to find work for their Truck so they bought a Load of Hay for $1 a Bale ,hauled it to Florida and sold it for $1 a Bale. When unloaded and over breakfast at a Truck Stop they were feeling bad as they could not figure how come they never made any Money. One fella says that the only thing he could figure that they could do was to buy a bigger Truck.[ Old Joke, every one Laugh now]

John, I think you are talking about my two neighbors here in Wisconsin. Last week I drove over to talk to one of them. He was standing in his yard holding an 8 ft piece of rope. He said "Now, let's see....did I just find a piece of rope or did I just lose a horse?".

cost of production has NOTHING to do with price. It is all supply and demand. And with weather problems all over feed prices are up. Sell it where you can. If you can make money in FL by all means ship it there. I could use some myself but I don't want to mess with small bales.

A 3x3x8 bale probably will only weigh about 800 lbs. Doubt it'll hit 1000 lbs. So that puts it up over 200 a ton. Getting pricey.

Hi Dave, yeah that's what I thought. I saw my neighbor to the west turn loose of a semi load of big squares last week but I don't know what he got for them. Last year he was getting $75 and they are usually about 17 to 1800 pounds.

Kinda hard to say. Got a call from a guy down in the Denver area looking for a load of small bales for his horse boarding facility. He told me to name a price, he was desperate. I don't have a bale I can ship unfortunately.

Maybe that re-baling for the horsey types would pay off. I know it gets higher than a cats' back around Colo. Springs this time of year.

Continual, steady stream of semis hauling load after load of big round bales. Can't haul it out fast enough.

No small bales to speak of in this country other than an occasional hobby horse owner. Cattle feeders like to buy tonnage and a lot of it.

Warmer weather is slowing down the consumption, or I'd be on the buying end. :>(

In this are most of the hay getting sold is in either small or big square bales because they are alot easier to truck but this year there are alot of round bales being moved because alot of buyer's need any hay they can get.

We've been really lucky to be just about 40 miles north of the drought in Missouri the past two year's so we are right at the edge of where hay is available.

Yep. 8 semi loads of hay setting at the local truckstop when I drove by. 7 loads big square bales and a load of small squares (mine). I don't see too many round bales travel through here, just not big enough ranch country I guess. Local hay auction had hay fetch up to $170 a ton from the stack. Be glad you aren't buying.

Here in southern Iowa it's probably been the best year for selling hay in at least a decade. We've sold about 7,000 small square bales and 100 round bales so far and will run out of hay before the phone stops ringing. This was our first year of selling hay outside of the local area and so far we've sent hay to four other states this year.

Last I heard, rail was about a buck a mile, but it may take sort of a round about way to get there. This was a while ago, and there's probably interchange fees between railroads. Railroads don't particularly like small shipments either, they like regularly scheduled stuff and bulk shipments.
