I've been meaning to post about this for a while so here it goes.

Our son Zach was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder back in February of '05. At the time I posted about it on the 'tales board. Again thanks for the thoughts and prayers expressed back then. A bit of an update.

A couple from our church also have an autistic son and they pointed us to the Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) program at the St. Amant Center in Winnipeg. Zach was accepted in the program and a worker was hired to be his tutor. We wound up switching workers for ABA's internal reasons and what a blessing. The new worker has made a huge difference. He now talks in 4 to 5 word sentences, and the 5 or 6 tantrums a day have disappeared. There are so many other changes it would be almost impossible to list them. She has given our son a hope for his future.

So if anyone out there knows of someone with an autistic child, there is hope. Anyone wants to talk, drop me an e-mail.

John

Wife works with children with Autism. She helps famlies set up and impliment the ABA program. Best I can tell as a third party is for everyone in the childs life to be consistent with the therapy. Somethings take longer than others. Best of luck, just ask if you have sny questions I can pass on to the wife.

nothing more heartbreaking to see a child in any kind of distress. it sure helps to know there are people trained, and with the heart to be able to give so much hope to them and you.

Aspergers is also becoming more common. There is a group on Yahoo that provides a lot of relevant info. Even hidden government programs, grants and tax deductions. Schafer and Carsten Schuett are a couple of names to look for. Some of these syndromes are genetic or genetic predispositions. Others are a result of toxins such as mercury, lindane etc.

My wife is a special ed teacher. (Prolly why she married me) She works with a lot of kids like that, although where she works they tend to have a lot of other problems too. She did tutor one for a few years when she was doing in home daycare. It was neat to see that kid progress. I think there is also some things you can do with their diet to help also. Some kinds of foods causes them problems, so check that out too. Good luck, there are lots of possibilities for him. BTW I saw a show on tv about a lady who had autism but was sort of a genius. She came up with a system to handle cattle to cause them less stress, I can't remember her name, but she was VERY interesting.

How old is your son? What classifies a kid as Autistic? I wish you and your family the best.

Thanks for the information. I sent a buddy a link to this post. His son was diagnosed with autism, he and his wife are doing well with it. Their son is now 4 yrs. old and they are doing a wonderful job.

Perhaps he will reach out to you. His name is Chris D.

Later,
ShepFL
