Howdy folks,

This question is put out there mainly for my fellow hay farmers but anyone else"s opinions are welcome. I"ve been browsing through some literature on Brillion"s new PS series seeders. They look like good machines to me and combining the seeder with the cultipacker is good as well. I have no immediate plans to purchase one but maybe a few years down the line. My old van brunt drill does a good job for the present time. My main thoughts on these seeders is the fact that you have no fertilizer hopper. I always like to put fertilizer in with the seed as I plant. I"m not a big fan of broadcasting the fertilizer as it helps out more weeds than it needs to. Just some curiousities. God bless.

I live about 20 minutes away fomr where they were built, and I still see more old Van Brunts in the feilds, us included. We've got a 12 ft model with the grass/other small seeds biox in front. We pull 2 packers behind it and it works great for us. I just don't see many of those Brillion seeders around anymore.

Nothing magic about a Brillion seeder. You can do the same thing by pulling a cast iron packer behind your already good grain drill. You can buy a packer for $100-300. Then reduce your seed rate by 30-50% because with better seed-to-soil contact, ...more seeds grow. I used to seed with a loader tractor, hung the packer on the loader while pulling the drill and seed wagon behind when going to another field. Later built a rubber tired packer, just left it hooked on behind the drill.

I have used a Brillion seeder here in Southeastern Ohio for several years to plant alfalfa and orchard grass and don't think it can be beat. Especially for dry weather seeding(August) when I do most of my planting. I used the old John Deere grain drill previously.

Brillion seeded will outshine a Van Brunt drill in late summer or early fall seeding especially when it is a little dry.

I have planted hundreds of acres of alfala and have had the best luck using my old John Deere Van Brunt Drill with the disks in the float position. I have also used a Brillion many times. You would think it would be better, but that has not been my experience. The most important factor is timely rains.
