Hi Gang;
I really would appreciate your thoughts.
This is 1992 MF 350 3 cyl turbo 50HP gross. 4F & 1 R with hi & lo. Ex agricultural college only 1040 hours from new - condition is as new.
It was for sale 90 miles from here in December at $17,500 ono - I had the chance to buy at $16,500 but hesitated and lost it by a few hours.
Now its for sale again, the buyer who outbid me wants to sell it on at his buying price of $17,500 and its now 180 miles away from here !
The tractor is rather underpowered, but I want it to be a "taxi" to tow my antique tractors to shows, and as a road-run tractor, dont have any land so it wont be used in anger. The price is $1500 to $2000 over what the tractor dealers think its worth. BUT where do you find such an original and under used tractor again?
Let me know your thoughts by responding to this post. (Most will think I am a crazy fool with too much money to spend - LoL)
Cheers David

David are you sure this is turbo charged? I suspect motor is 152 CI 3cylinder perkins. The motors are bullet proof. You say you want to tow with it, having owned a similar machine (148 Fergy) check that the brakes work, they are next to useless on these machines. New pads though will help. Does it have A/C? Does it work? Sound tractor and will not let you down.

Cheers

Mitch

Do as my friend did with a new bass boat. Used his wifes money she was going to spend on a new living room out fit for about four years.

I would cold start it and make an offer.

I always wonder about the logic in a seller saying "I have this much in it, so I need that much to sell it".

If he paid too much that's his problem, not yours. If the tractor is worth that much to YOU, then okay. Otherwise offer your price.

It would be hard to find another tractor of that vintage with such low hrs. It might be a little overpriced but it will be a long time before it needs much in repairs. I say buy it.

David, I sure have enjoyed all the photos you post. Really some great shots. On the tractor in question, I would go over it with a fine tooth comb,looking for any problems or things that might worry me about future repairs required. It looks awfully nice in the photo and if you can verify that those are truly original hours, it might not be a bad deal. Of course, I"m assuming that in Wales, just as here in the US. a tractor is worth what the buyer is willing to pay for it. It"s only overpriced if you feel that it is. Good luck and hope your decision makes you happy. God Bless.

If I may let me add a partial take on this tractor. We"ve got more tractors on this farm than I can count anymore, every one of the necessary including one totally standing by as a spare. Three of the these tractors I class as over powered: A WD45 Allis Chalmers with a power pack, I drive with lazily placed foot riding hig in the clutch; We’ve also a 1850 Oliver its behavior much like the WD45; the last power package is an 2150 Oliver what has no idea of its power/strength capable of junking any implement drawn on its tow bar. The way I see it a first time underpowered tractor for a novice isn’t such a bad idea. Further, my unknowing this MF in question is likely Perkins powered, not a bad engine to buy parts fro, Perkins now under the Cat umbrella. If its as clean a machine as suggested low on hours a premium price may not be out of the question. Yet, at that possibly inflated price I’d take a knowledgeable tractor man with me for a comprehensive appraisal. Make a list of checks to follow before tractor’s start and same list of checks following a good warm up (Test Drive). Checks should note cold fluid levels: engine, radiator, transition, final drive. Warmed up all these fluid levels again, plus note if any milky fluid appearance, different smells of normal application fluids. Fluid color and odors indicator transference of oils thru internal machinery leaks indicating internal troubles. Engine rebuild, Hydraulic rebuild discounts should reflect project repair cost discounts. An a higher than usual market price may well warrant a written guarantee or warrantee. The only Tractor bought in recent years without my inspection cost the farm near double to make it mechanically correct. It’s a toughie now, that’ll last beyond my remaining lifetime. Good Luck
Fernan

Morning Allan;
You are up & about early today. Thanks for your thoughts.
MF only made just over 1000 of this model, most were 4wd and supplied on turf wheels to golf courses etc.
I dont want nor need 4wd, extra wearing parts & tyres. To replace rear wide turf wheels & tyres would be expensive.
Just missed another 2wd on turfs at $13,750.
Yes this one Im looking at is TOO EXPENSIVE and the seller has realised this too, he has paid too much for a tractor-taxi. If I buy it, I would be in the same position that he is in right now !
When I tried to buy it last December I saw lots of photos and it appeared to be "perfect" in in good working order.
Cheers David

And out of 1000, how many in that shape? MAYBE 10? Would you be any better off buying a less expensove one then correcting all the problems until it's in the shape of the one you've already found? I doubt it. It sounds ideal for what you want. I don't know the local customs, but here the seller would EXPECT a lower offer. Although, if I had that tractor and was SELLING it, I'd hold my price. That's a nice piece. Best of luck!

Heck,

I don't think you're crazy, however, sure think I'd run over there and give it a spin first.

Might be a reason he's trying to unload it so soon?

Allan

I agree. The tractor is probably the same as another MF for a different market. Did the guy buy it hoping to make money? It you give him a lower offer he can sell it right away. If he insists on the higher price he may or may not sell it. Most buyers are pretty smart and the price is too high for hobby farmers I think. It all depends on how bad he wants to sell it. You might be the only one interested. Anything for sale is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I backed out of a land deal that was over priced. It still wasn't a lot but after I backed out it's been sitting for 4 years and I don't think any realtor wants to list it because the stupid owner paid too much years ago and wanted to make money. In 50 or 60 years the land fill will take it over. It has lots of restrictions and the county will never put a high value on it since they'll be taking it over eventually. Dave
