Im overhauling a Case S tractor. When I cleaned the head the part number for the head in the Case parts book shows it as a High Altitude head. What is the difference between that and a regular head. Does it make a differece on the way the tractor should run down here on the Canadian praries .

My Case S series tractor operators manual says "The engine is designed to operate on gasoline having a minimum rating of 65 octane." That would indicate to me that their high compression version is still probably fairly low compression, so probably any gasoline you can get these days will be more than good enough.

5617A is a higher compression head than the 5618A which is far more common

I'm from Iowa but I'm in the Kamsack area every Sept. when I travel with a harvesting crew. It'd be fun to look you up next fall if I get back in your area. Jim

Tractor companys built tractors for different areas in the country low and high altitudes. In the higher altitudes you needed more compression to squeeze the thiner air for better combustion. To do this they made the chambers smaller in the heads plus added domes on the pistons to increase compression. Also most LP gas tractors used a higher compression heads the results is more power.
