Could a Heavy Duty Big Y 427 block engine be installed in a 78 Chev 1T dually 4speed and what kind of gas millage could be expected. It Has a SB 350 industrial now and gas millage is around 12 now. 78 Truck is extra heavy as it is a Dirt box dump with a 16GVW door tag. Made that way from factory

Benny,

I love Big blocks can you tell by the pic?

You will have to get big block motor mounts, roughly an 1" shorter. You can use the small block moutns, the motor will just sit a little higher.

Tall decks, commonly called truck blocks (not from a truck, but a 366 or 427) have a 0.400" taller deck height, pistons are unique with an extra ring. And of course, its the nice super strong 4 bolt block. The have tiny intake runners, which are great for low end torque that you are after. Bad for us hi-rev drag racers.

About the only things that are not shared with the common passenger car big block are the intake and the distributor.

These motors use to be quite the find for us drag racers. You could sell the crank to buy a stroker crank and have quite a motor just had to scrap those "peanut port" heads. They are not as common anymore.

Oh your gas mileage question...
Worse than the small block empty, better than the small block with a load since it won't lug the engine as hard.

Keep a gas station in site!!!!!

The heavy duty 427 tall deck block, steel crank ,that's a motor. That motor design low rpm big torque . Truck motor ,the 400 small block as Allen referred to was also designed to be a truck motor.427 It'll wear the truck out ! Steve

Well basically it has already outlasted the 78 S-65 chev that it is in! ;)) And still runs great. It may have been rebuilt but I just dont know it was a big service truck. With a self loader crane on it.

Benny,

Does your 427 take 8 quarts or 10? I assume it uses the 2-quart filter?

Sorry I just dont know I just got this rig and for parts only. But it is a 27500 GVW door tag. I have a 88 GMC 7000 366 YB 29000 Gvw DrTg and 10 qt and big oil filter looks the same engine.

Benny,

Look at the forward slope of the pan to be sure it will clear your front A-frame crossmember.

Like Mike M reminded us, GM made many different configurations of that oil pan, depending on a wide range of applications and they could vary all the way from the 5 quart to the 10 quart sizes.

You may get around 7-8 MPG ?

And that comment about a big block not having any snort ? I'll take the big block for pulling a trailer any day over a small block.

And if that 427 will fit ? I can't say for sure. I have heard they are taller and the oil pan looks bigger ?

Yes Taller Y block, it is taller than the 454 BBC.

The reason Iam considering it is because I want to pull a B-hoe on a trailer.

The 350 will do a great heavy load even at road speeds but if really heavy at or near 20000 combo, grinds up the steep or long hills. Which there are many here, even on the Freeways.

I license this truck for a trailer combo weight of 22000GVW

You may want to reconsider pulling the backhoe. Alot of states are cracking down on overloaded trucks, small trucks especially. They are holding them to the GCVW on the door plate irreguardless of what it is tagged for. You take that truck, add a 6-7000# trailer, then throw 11-12,000+ lbs of backhoe on it,Somewhere in the neighborhood of 25-27,000 lbs, less the 16K GCVW and you are looking at a 11,000lb overweight ticket, plus whatever else they want to cite you with. Here in Md that would be a $5000+ ticket.

Oh sure,

All those old Chevies will interchange. You'll need just about every bracket, bolt and nut from the 427 application to do it tho.

I've had something like 7 engines in my old '78 from the 350 to the Olds diesel to the 454 and 400. I've ran it on gasoline, propane and the diesel.

Mine is a 4X4 too, so that 2-wheeler ought to be a snap.

Might add,

Best of the bunch was that little 400 small block. The big blocks never did impress me. Just don't have the snort.

Well I have never seen a 400 SBC that didnt crack between the cylinders.
I have a complete 427 setup in a series 65 76 chev truck. How about going with the 5 speed trans? That is in the s65 truck? Any big advantage of the 5spd? How mush weight will be added with a change like this. How much loss in gas millage?

Don't think you're gonna loose any mileage, if fact, you just might gain a little 'cause that big block will "loaf" over the 350.

I had to use the extra spring out of a Sub to make a 3-leaf on my 4X4. Don't know on your coils; try it and see, I guess. If worse comes to worse, you could probably use springs out of a 454 tonner.

Can't speak to the 5-speed change, as I've never done that one. That sucker is heavy tho. :>)

My thinking on the gas is the same as yours, as loaded the 350 is hard at work all the time, maybe lose on the empty trips. Cant believe that these trucks also come with the 250 6 1barrel carb but they did ;((

Now to make the trany even heaver I have to keep the PTO with the big Hyd pump alive that has 3 hyd valves installed! woe!

I put a 250 with a bunch of Clifford Preformance parts on it in my '72 3/4 ton. That sucker will run considering its only 250 cid. and does great on fuel. Truck had a 454 I removed when I redid it. The BB was hard on fuel and the power didn't impress me. Honestly, I've had both big and small blocks, and none of them turned me on as truck engines. IMO GM put the truck engines in their high end cars(Caddy's for example).....
