took top crankcase cover off JD "D" found one bearing insert pounded out. crankshaft ok found nos bearings ready to reassemble. trying to rid crankcase of babbit flakes without dissasembling engine. used blowgun with siphon hose but that srays out in a fog. using gasoline as cleaning agent. next i'm going to try weedsprayer with diesel spraying out in stream. dry blowgun just blows it around. any other sugestions? can i use garden hose with water?

My personal opinion is that kerosene cuts gunk better than diesel. Relatively safe and cheap.

I do too, but remember when you do that, you have a blow torch that only needs a spark.KA_BOOM !

I think a weed sprayer with diesel fuel or kerosene, or varsol, and an open drain plug on the bottom would be a good way to wash it out. Meybe if you contain the drainings and pour it through a cheesecloth you can re-use the solvent until you get the case clean.
