Well, heres part one of my allis C teardown. i know i said allis, but this pertains to all types, and thats why im not in the allis forum. have you ever went to buy a tractor and got the "i totally rebuilt the motor and done it right" deal? Well, i did, and when i heard it run, i believed it. And, of course, i knew the guy and didnt think he would tell me wrong. Dad always said its bad to deal between friends...lol. Well, the C ran great onto the trailer and off. i knew it had a weld on the side of the block, but had seen no problems from it. Until i got it off the trailer. And then i went to check the oil, or should i say antifreeze in the oil pan. Yeah, i was wrong. I figured i just as well swap the block, got another and the gasket set and tore into it tonight... started at 9 pm and at 3 a.m. had all the guts out of the engine. The block was busted BAD. And the funny thing is, that "complete rebuild" consisted of a set of rings. Not to say the rest is BAD but it wasnt new with the rings. The sleeves were sanded with a piece of sandpaper, the pistons werent even cleaned up, and the bearings are definantly well used. the governor is even wore all to heck. The temporary fix that was put on this tractor sure made the sale, but like i said, was temporary. Though its a bit more of a project than i had anticipated, it was still a good deal, all in all, i really didnt get hurt despite what im going to have to put into it. What gets me, however, is how someone can call a set of rings, a few gaskets and a sleeve polishing with good ol' sandpaper a "total rebuild done right". I sure hope this "friend" of mine never becomes a doctor! But my question is, how many of us have fallen into these deals? im sure im not the only one. Guess tomorrow night ill get to work on it some more... ill keep yall updated. i think im gonna just have to perty it up instead of just makin her run good to brush hog. if im gonna put this into it, its a restorer i guess... will look good. I guess i just needed to gripe a little, but like my good buddy Chris (in-too-deep) once said, "if all the work is done, what fun is it?" Well, Chris... this one is definantly going to be FUN! :) Maybe the reason my "friend" talked me into this was so i would have plenty of fun?!?!?! HAHAHA Could be worse, right? well, off to bed.... later yall

Well shoot...guess we take the good with the bad. We shoulda tore into that engine when I was down there so we both coulda cussed at it. Hey if it makes ya feel any better, I got the left side wheel put together for my B yesterday. I was rolling it over to the tractor(those cast centers are HEAVY) and I lost control of the wheel. Instead of it tipping over on me and killing me, it fell on one of my grilles, and killed that. Just like last June, I threw my hands up and walked away. Yup, take the good with the bad...or atleast enjoy the little bit of good we get between all the bad.

Dang Chris.... u r lucky... wheeling those around by yourself is one heck of a rough task... ive always figured id lose one over the hill by the shop and it would be gone (still better than bein squished). Did that with a tire/wheel off that old dump truck one time, watched it go all the way down the hill across the creek, through the field, up that side and back to the creek. Like you said, all you can do is throw your hands up. Well, ill keep an eye out for a grill, what side? Whole lot easier replacing that grill than a pal.....

how did ur block deal turn out?

I've dealt with a lot of people in buying tractors and of the nine I bought ,only had one dishonest seller. When I picked the tractor up, he had his father there and I never even saw him and later I understood why. rip-off. That was my first one and that taught me a good lesson. From then on I studied and knew what to look for.

I would "talk" to my buddy, if he did that to me. Don't let him get away with it. Set him straight. He is laughing, bragging, and telling all his real friends how easy it was to fool you right now. When you set him straight made sure his buddies are there to hear it. Tom

Sounds just like the Toyota truck I bought last fall, drove 400 miles to go get it. Advertised as a standard shift with cruise control, new timing chain and a warranty. It was an auto, no cruise and they just cleaned everything up to make it look like they'd done the chain, which dug into the cover on the way home. No warranty, even though they said so. If I'm ever in Quarkertown, P.A. again will someone come and bail me out of jail?

Sounds like the 41 jd h I bought on ebay from Mcgrew equip in PA. Drove several hundred miles with a flatbed to get it and it didn't measure up to anything stated. I have learned a lot about the inside of my tractor project, which is a good thing. I have also learned to ask more questions, ask for reciepts, and make others accountable for what they say. From now on when someone says something has been "gone through" I'll get very specific as to what that means to them.

Reminds me of a sickle bar mower for a Cub that a friend's father bought from a local dealer some years ago- they told him it had "gone through the shop". After trying to get the bent-up thing mounted, then unsucessfully trying to get it to operate, he called the dealer and opined that apparently, when it "went through the shop", it must have his a couple of posts on the way through. Dealer was unhappy with that characterization, and refused to assist. Buyer ended up dumping it squarely in front of the front door of the dealership during the night. When dealer called to angrily complain, buyer apologized for any inconvenience, but the door was locked, so he could not put it on the owners desk, as he would have preferred.

Sounds like a Farmall H I bought "overhauled" Yeah, they'd but new valves in the head. THE WRONG VALVES. Stems were too long, no pressure on the springs. We honed the cylinders and put in new rings. The bearings were still OK but they were certainly NOT NEW. So yeah, it's "buyer beware"

Or,

Like the little tractor I bought that was a "throw-together" straight out of the local junk yard.

Geeze! Takes a lot of patience (and coin) to put 'em right again.

Well, you can ask him how he defines "rebuilt, done right", but I don't think you'll like the dance or beligerance you'll get.

Like others have said, alway buy based on the worse. And engine with a patch on it that's been rebuilt? I sure would expect the worse, and make an offer accordingly.

You've got to say something to the seller. Do it to protect his next buyer. It takes a bit of courage to let him know you know what he did. But courage is an indispensible virtue. Give the seller a chance to fess up, even if you're not asking for money back.

Unless I know the person VERY well, I automatically assume that anyone that's trying to sell me something is lying to me.

I've been right a LOT more often than I've been wrong.

this is one I've lost on.$500 bucks ,saw it stroke ,but didn't have a load on it ,,soon as tried to split wood keyway sheared ,,well long story short ,tried to fix keyway issue and snapped gear shaft ..to find out pump was turning WAY overspeed for it's designed rate 20 gpm at 1200rpm's ,,it was running over 2700 and don't think the unit ever worked right..Cylinder leaks when I hooked it to tractor hydraulics ...
Should a known to steer clear when I first went to look at it and U joint needed to be replacing before I could even see it run..but I didn't ,so now I got the start to a wood splitter in the yard and something else for the wife to tell be I did wrong!!
