I'm converting my propane tractor to gasoline, and the tank I got is completely dry, but it looks rusty inside. I have read several posts in the past about turpentine "eating" rust. Has anyone on here ever tryed this method? Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks doorman

Thanks for the responses. I don't think the tank is galvanized, it is on an IH 460. I will try either the vinegar or lime away. It was completely dry inside, and the cap was in place so it may not be too bad inside. doorman

Muriatic acid will do the job but you have to treat it like acid because that's what it is. Your local hardware store might carry it. I pour a little undiluted into the tank, put the lid on and rotate the tank around until all the walls are coated. The I let it sit a short time and then fill it with water and drain it several times. The fumes will burn your nose and eyes a little of you aren't in a well ventilated area. I just cleaned out a tank off of a Wisconsin V4 where I got about a coffee cup full of rust out even before I used the acid and by the time I was done the inside of the tank was shiny. Jim

Try this Re: Rusty Gas Tank in reply to doorman, 02-20-2007 20:20:04
Use Lime Away it will desolve rust and treat the metal so as not to rust more. Make sure it is not galvanized before you do this, it eats up galvo up

I have used turpemtine but it will only do so much and you will still have some rust. Best way by far it to get a tank liner and put it in. Cost around $20-30 but in the long run probably worth it
