Well, it's off topic I know but I've seen computer help requests here before so here goes. I have a computer here with 6 accounts on it. One of the people who has an account on the computer is no longer accessing the computer and I want to rid the computer of his files. I am the system administrator and I know the password for this particular individual so I have access to everything in there. I realize I could probably take it to a shop and pay an hours labor or so to get it done, but is this something that I could do myself? Your help or suggestions are appreciated.

It seems like that when a person has a skill, and especially when they do not have very many of them, that they often think that their skill is very important and needed by everyone.

Some funny answers. For serious user- first backup files with deceased name, burn a CD or use a backup tape before deleting. The computer gremlins will then leave you alone- if you don't backup files the IRS or state inspectors will want to see the file before statute of limitations expire and they will make all sorts of nasty comments about evasion, obstruction, etc. Next check Kountrylife and ask for Gerrits' help- check 'Newbies' board if you can find it. For Vern and Rick, your sarcastic comments I guess I have to swallow. Actually, I am a plumber by trade and only the system administrator on the computer. Why do people have to be so quick to be rude. Thank God I'm not from the middle east. Anyways, it is Windows XP and I want to get rid of the whole sheebang since the person is not alive at this time and will be having no further use for his files.

Go to control panal, user accounts will allow you to modify the login screen (XP home). I am assuming this is your shop machine and it is part of a work group and not connected to a domain server. If it is, right click on "My Computer" hit manage, user and groups. Remove from both.

Howard H gave good advice about manually removing the files.

That users files will be found under:

C:\Documents and Settings\joeuser

If you are sure you don't need anything they had, you can delete that "joeuser" subdirectory underneath "C:\Documents and Settings\" and it will delete all their temporary Internet files, email, favorites, desktop, my documents, and various other system directories.

What operating system, XP or other, and home or pro

When you say, get rid of his files....are you just trying to delete the log on account or my documents or what?

Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Change Accounts

I believe you can delete a file from there.

Those of you who are jumping this guy's case have misunderstood him. He is not claiming to be a sysadmin in the vocational sense of the word. He is simply stating that his account is the primary admin. account on the computer.

Nice shot you just gave him...big of you.
You couldn't read that he was just a "system administrator" of that one computer? Surely you know that XP has a system administrator in it's program and it doesn't mean that he would know how to delete another person's file.

That's not what he said at first. He just said "I'm the system administrator." Period..nothing about the type of system or other mitigating details. That would be like me stating I'm a plumber because I have two pipe wrenches and then asking how to change a fitting. It invites questions of credibility.

So I'm a plumber and you're a lawyer. At least we know what each other does for a living. Meanwhile, I said that I am "the" system administrator, not "a" system administrator. So you'll have to put that in your plumbers pipe and smoke it, at least have a pull on it. Anyways, I think I might try to do some of this stuff, if the computer blows up .... so what? And for the IRS coming around, I seriously doubt that they even have his name in a file since he hasn't filed a tax return in 30 years.

A lawyer? You got me mixed up with one of the other guys. I'm a grouchy, 61-yr-old retired bank operations officer and desk farmer. Anywhere I've been, the claim to the title "system administrator" (either given or self-proclaimed) assumes a certain level of expertise, just as claiming the title plumber assumes a certain level of expertise in that field. If you had simply asked how to delete users and files, no one would have batted an eye.

Wow, a computer system administrator that doesn't know how to delete files? I'm really not trying to be critical, but that's a scary thought. Of course you can do it yourself. Assuming it's a Windows system, just right-click on the Start button and then left-click on "explore". Navigate to the files you want to delete; (you do know how file folders work, right?) highlight them and press "DEL" or drag them to the recycle bin...simple as that.
