off topic a bit but it is mostly for farm use, and reducing it is directly related to my farm economics , sooo--- we are trimming the fat on our " luxeries" already notified dish network of my donation halt($50 a month deposited at 5% for 10 years is close to $7800 saved and earned), now I want to reduce my cell bill, I have verizen, 3 phones( 1 is MIL, xmas gift for 2 year)at $90 a month. I HAVE to have the cell phone for the barn alarm system, wife must have hers for work- med reords sup- will be dropping MIL at xmas. What kind of plans and with who do you guys have that are good, yet econimical. I am getting in the cropping thing this spring and a dollar saved is $1.05 I can save and invest in my future farming. Long I know but felt the need to explain my state of mind!

Lots of ways to save money on cellphones Dave, but you're not givin' us enough information. How many minutes do you use per month, individually and in total? Do you travel out of state with it a lot? Who are the available providers in your area? You ought to be able to get a good 2-phone shared plan for about $50 + tax & fees, so probably closer to $60 total. If you don't use the phone except for emergencies, look into a TracFone prepaid. It'll run you $99 for 250-400 prepaid minutes, good for a year, depending on what kind of a promotion you can get in on. That comes out to about $9 a month. Something like that might work for one or both of you. Or, ditch you landline phone and go strictly cellular with a more robust minute plan.

I did the track phone thing (now with T mobile prepaid) The Trackphone worked, but they charged me for just every learning thing in units it was a financial horror story. They "tracked" me for what seemed like thinking about a call. JimN

For me, I use mine all the time. Gave up my land line (saved me $80 a month doing that). Cell with T mobile is $58 with tax (49.99). 1000 any time mins. free nights and weekends, and 400 text messages. I drive 60,000 miles a year so if I didnt do my phone time on the road Id never get it done.

Dave it sounds like you have been listening to Dave Ramsey!. I am in the exact same mindset you are in. I only use a minimal amount of cell phone time but am glad I have it now. If I head out on snowmobiles or in a less than they used to be reliable car, I can call out on it. I have an Alltel plan that gives me 150 minutes a month for $25 dollars. I have been looking around this place lately and thinking about doing a lot of selling on ebay to get rid of stuff I have bought too. Too many projects, not enough time. Later.

I just spent some time the last few months really looking over the our spending and compairing where we would be if we were channeling that $ into a long term savings and target a decent return. It is quite surprising how much them little "oh it's only $30/month " things add up to a heck of alot of cash if saved and earning a decent interest rate. I am pushing hard to have this place payed off in 10 years, and have a substantial saving and assets from the farm. We still will do things just cut cost and make sure we actually save the money. Daughter will be off to college in 3-4 years, another in 7 years and one 3 years after that. I want to be able to help them so they do not have to borrow from a bank, plus I do not want to have any loan payments after I am 47. I saw a buddies name in the foreclosure notice last week, he has everything you can imagine, has a good income as well as his wife, but they will probably lose the home, and of course what follows, their happy marraige.

You just have to deside who is in charge . You or keeping up with the others . I have been poor, had a little give it to the X. Now I plan to retire at 60. 8 more years

Don't use cell phones here, can get expensive.Minimal channels on the Dish Network(basics),walk about the house turning off lights, turn down the unit when not there.Keep a good cloths line and clothspins and use them.Leftovers are a must.I just fixed two leaky faucets to aid in the water bill and electricity.

Basic Verizon family Share Plan=500 minutes, free Phone for 2 year commitment $50.00,extra phone is $ 9.99 and taxes and misc charges, total $69.99.Question is why is your MIL Bill $90.00? Roaming should not be an issue in Mn. My experience is don't mess with Mother Nature or Mother in laws or Wives. I am sure you can find some frivoulous expenses to trim rather than deprive your Family of something that they have grown used to. Stop, look in the Mirror and see if that fellow has some expenses that are not cost effective. You are asking for opinions and this is mine. Good luck in your farming operation.John

I couldn't figure out what MIL meant either. You abbreviate a lot and I find it hard to follow. I really hate the "xmas" one. We use a prepaid phone here and like it a lot. Costs me peanuts and I only pay for it when I need it.

Cut the MIL loose. Get a good family plan for you and your wife and barn if it needs one. Should be able to do that for all under $ 90.00 per month. Cut the BS out when talking and that will reduce your minutes to a managable plan. $ 90.00 per month. I would say MIL is taking advantage of you.

Not much competition up in our area, I drop 90$ a month on a pair of phones (paid for before service contract!) to share an 80 min a month contract.
