On the farmall I can't help but on the Allis I can. Yes on the WD etc you can shift gears when you disengage the hand clutch and the PTO is live because of it. Now on the WD if you push the foot clutch down you stopp both the tractor and the PTO. Reason I know you can shift gears is because I do it all the time on both my WD and my WD45

No big deal on that Steve I thought about saying something to you about it but didn't. Only reason I know it can be done is because I have done it more then once on my WD45 when brush hogging and went from forward to back ward and kept the hog going

On the Allis and the M&W hand clutch for the Farmalls: Hand clutch will stop forward motion and keep the PTO running ("live" PTO) - you can not shift gears using the hand clutch.

You must use the foot clutch to shift gears and the PTO will stop.

The hand clutch on the Allis tractor is nothing like the M&W thing on the Farmall. It was not designed to let you shift the transmission. However, over the last 50 some years, with the inclusive normal wear, and if the temps are warm, gear oil is warm, etc.- you can shift using the hand clutch if you are quick about it. The hand clutch runs in oil,and snapping the lever forward does separate the plates somewhat, but when it left the factory it was not designed for anything but providing live pto and hydraulic operation, while the foot clutch was intended for shifting gears.
