I am having a lot of problems when I do a google, or other site search. When I click on the a link that I want to go to, it keeps going to other site, sometimes 3-4 times, it wont let me use the "back" butten to go back to google, i have to go go to history and click, then if I click on the link I MAY actually get to the correct site. My laptop also is VERY slow sometimes getting to a site and opening it. I have run my Norton scan a few times recently and it says it fin nothing. Any one have a clue, it just started doing this the last month or so, I am sick of it, plus I dont feel safe going to any of my bank web sites now. I am worried I may have an undetected spyware or something that some one could see my info and steel my millions. Also get a lot of redirects to some pretty sick websites, none that we would ever want to see, BIL did use the laptop while he was farm sitting for me a while back, so maybe he went some where that gave me something. Any ideas or advice. Sorry so long

Sounds to me like you are running IE-7 (released vs Beta version). I'm convinced it has a bug in it. I installed Firefox and the same problem went away.

I agree with a couple of the guys, Get rid of the cookies and tempor..intern...files. They eat a lot of mem space. Drop Nortons, not as good of a program as it use to be. Down load Spybot, it is free and does a good job searching out the hidden unwantables.....
Good Luck.....

Sounds like a browser hijacker. Not terribly sure how to get rid of it. Time to clean house I suspect. HTH

Oh yes, I'd be for getting rid of Norton, too - on many machines it does OK, but on some it just KILLS performance terribly.

AVG is a great free one:

If you install it, be sure to remove all of Norton first (you may have more than one Norton component listed in add/remove programs) - trying to run more than one antivirus is just asking for trouble.

You most likely have a real problem.

If you are getting website redirects, it means something malicious has gained control of the part of Windows that allows it to talk to the Internet.

You might try an online antivirus scan at:

Link

But a lot of this garbage these days is not technically a virus, since it may not spread on it's own. SO, if it is something that was "invited" (installed by your BIL) onto your PC, antivirus won't find it.

If you are very lucky, you might see it listed in "add/remove programs" in your control panel. There are a surprising # of pretty harmful parasite programs that actually list themselves in there. Things like wildtangent and zango can be removed this way.

You might also try downloading and running Microsoft's latest - Windows Defender and see what it says.

The bad news is - there aren't many good malware removers that I've seen - Adaware used to be OK, but it has gone down hill, for example, many of the other free ones actually cause more trouble than they help.

If you are handy on a PC, you might run "msconfig" and check the startup list of programs and services. Many malware are listed here for launch at startup.

Also, you might check your hosts file located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc (assuming you are running Windows XP or 2000) - it should be empty except for a few documentation lines and one local loopback entry. If it has a bunch of entries for Norton, Sophos, Mcafee, etc, delete all those out - they are preventing you from actually getting to those sites...

A lot of this type of junk actually modifies Windows itself, so if none of these steps help, your best bet is to reinstall Windows. You can install a clean version without losing all your information. You can email me if you have questions on that.

Good luck,
Howard

Under TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS delete cookies, history and temporary internet files. Do that every day or so. Get three free software applications: AdAware by LavaSoft, AVG Antivirus and Zone Alarm firewall. All are easy to install and use, effective and highly regarded.

If you want to keep other people from using your computer to go to bad places where you get fleas, download NAOMI, another freebie. When it is on and someone goes to, say, a porn site, it just slams the browser closed. No more fleas.

Clean your history and cookies. Reboot and give 'er another try.

FWITW, I'd be for gettin' rid of that Norton. Nothing but a huge power hog.
