I'm referring to the old style, square shaft briggs and stratton recoil clutchs. Its happend to me a couple of times with a few different 5 hp engines, but after it starts or sometime during the session its running, it will make a high pitch squeal. Do these things need lube once in a while? Just curious. Thanks -Mike

As a Small Engines instructor for 30+ years, I have fixed many of the "squealing, rope spitting" recoils on B & S engines.
Remove the square(very old machine) or newer rounded clutch drive. Locate & clean all the ball bearings. Clean all residue out of the cup/flywheel nut. Many times I needed to file the long end of the crankshaft back to a round shape where someone hit it with a hammer while attempting to remove the flywheel.
Lightly lube the end of the crank and put a drop or 2 of engine oil inside the clutch drive; place the drive on the crankshaft, replace the ball bearings, install the retaining parts and you are good to go.

Two weeks ago my 5 hp tiller was doing the same thing. I tried everything grease, oil, went to a shop that had new and use parts replaced the clutch part had no more problem. my clutch must have worn out.

Mike If you look at the end of the square, is there a round plug pressed into it? If so there should be a piece of felt behind it. The plug will have a small hole in the middle of it where you can squirt in some lite machine oil. Jim WJ

try lube-ing the end of the crank where it goes up into the recoil clutch, clean it first then just a dab of grease or a drop of oil

I tried that usualy is something rubbing , if you lub balls in ratchet they will stick and not re-wind I also Cause not to ingauge tried that had to take apart and clean oil out would just ust some lub-a-plate on shaft . I did this after changing 5500 watt power unit to Electric start but retained manuel start for Emergency start in case battery is down .

When this type of starter Briggs starter clutch is squealing it usually means the end of the extended paret of the crankshaft that goes into the square part of the clutch is dry. The best cure is to take clutch off and lightly grease the shaft with a good lubricant and then reassemble it all. The hole in the end of the clutch mechanisim is for putting a drop of oil into if the engine is vertical and it does the same thing, just doesn't last as long. Sometimes the rope will back out of the recoil when it gets dry enough. Also kee the balls clean and their compartments dry and free from dirt or trash.

Yes, the only way to fix this is take the clutch off and clean the crank shaft and oil or greese it.I needs to be polished and then lubed. They can squeel and spit the rope out when they get real bad.
