Attached is a shrimp boat leaving Port Isabel. They go out about a month at a time with a crew of three. Payday is when they come back and sell the shrimp (they are excellent shrimp).

Got to wonderin'. If farmers had to pack up their tractors and work in the fields for thirty days without comin home, how different things would be.

I know, this is a stretch, but I wanted to post that shrimp boat.

Sorry about that but you're wrong...shrimp is flash frozen and in the stores withing weeks. No seafood will keep for the length of time you say. If the shrimp is peeled and deveined before freezing, it will lose a bit of flavor and texture, otherwise you can't tell it from fresh. I'll repeat, if the shrimp is in a scampi or any other sauce, you'd have to be a major palate to tell the difference and 99.9% of the people are not. Cheaper off the boat...if your boat is just working for fuel from the fish houses, then you have to get into a different business. As I said, I'm in a shrimping area and the shrimpers aren't stupid, they charge just about what the store charges...unless I catch them out in the Gulf, then I can get a bunch of pounds for a six pack.

I'm from west of Colorado Springs, CO in the mountains. I'm one of those pesky Winter Texans that stays on Long Island Village for four months in the winter.

I have friends here that go out often and seemingly always catch fish. I have not been out.

Are you familiar with the swing bridge to this island? It's the first one I've seen.

I'll try to post a picture of that bridge later.

Yes that is a one of a kind bridge. I have stayed at that park several times as a "vacation" so to speak. I have always wondered how far down that cable goes so that boats can go over it without it catching the props. Is that bar (Margarita Mommas) still open just shore side of that bridge? I rebuilt all the refrigeration in that things a few years ago but I didnt think that rest would ever do well. Anyway take care and have fun. Valley people don t mind you winter texans, you bring what they dont have.....money. Caleb in TX(College Station that is)

Nah....but bs is bs....I'm surrounded by shrimpers...it's good but no better than store bought. If there was a decent price differential, then it'd be worth it. You believe in tooth fairies?

Great picture!

I wish that I could get fresh shrimp here. All we have in the grocery stores are frozen shrimp from Thailand or Vietnam.

Guess i'm going to have to make a trip south one of these days soon....

Close your eyes and you can't tell the difference. I bought straight off the boat....with head on....no great bargain. When you take the weight of the head off then the price was equivalent to store bought. Tastes the same and really the same if you use shrimp sauce.
