I have a K2500 4x4 with a 350 in it. The truck shut down and I didn't have a spark. Well short story is I replaced the distributor and coil and still nada.I getting a hot to the coil but the coil isn't getting a signal to fire. Could it be a bad computor???? Checked codes and there isn't any. Charles

Mornin' Charles,

Say, you've got some pretty high-powered help here and I sure don't wanna nose in on your thread, but you say you have no fault codes.

What kind of a readout are you getting? No readout at all? A reading of two horizontal dashes? Are you even getting the code 12?

Allan

Hi Allan, Yes I'm reading code 12. If I understand right, it should run code 12 three times then show the trouble codes if any using the dash light. Right???
Thanks,
Charles

Code 12 just means "no tach signal", and will be present any time the key is on, and the engine is NOT turning.

Don't sweat the trouble codes to find out why you have no spark. With the "set timing" connector pulled as I told you before the distributor will spark even with the 'puter "dead" or removed.

Why not tell us what YEAR it is????

Or did I miss something?

They made quite a few variations in the electronic ignition as the years went by, and I'm not QUITE psychic enough to GUESS which setup you are working with!

Hi Bob, just came back home and here we go. I unpluged the computer and checked the voltage at the two plugs going to the coil. The plug from the module (red) had 324 ohms and the (white) had nothing. The plug coming from the cab had 12 volts on the heavy red wire and nothing on the heavy white wire. I'm going to unplug the harness going to the module and read there next.
Thanks,
Charles

Charles,

Don't sweat the "Ohms" right now.

Both red wires share a common connection inside the coil. One brings 12-Volts into the coil from the ignition switch. The other takes 12-Volts FROM that connection down to the module in the distributor,

The white wires also connect to a common point. One goes to the module, along with the red wire.

The other goes to the tach, if used, and, I believe, the 'puter.

What you need to do is LEAVE THE CONNECTORS CONNECTED TO THE COIL AND MODULE.

Probe (pierce the insulation) on the white wire. (You can seal the hole with a dab of silicone sealant later.)

With the igntion switch "ON", the white wire MUST light a test light. As soon as you turn the key to "START", the test light probed into the white wire MUST flash as the module is firing the coil.

Check this, and post back. Maybe start a new thread, as this one is a couple of pages back.

Or email me.

Any chance the timing chain or gears could have broke/stripped, and the distributor is not turning?

If that's OK, you should have battery voltage on BOTH red wires at the coil. The WHITE wires at the coil should have battery voltage, too, which the module pulses (pulls down to ground) each time it is time for a spark.

If that checks out, pull the "set timing" connector apart (connector with single brown wire located under relay cover the RH of firewall OR above the passenger's shins, in some versions.

With the "set timing" connector disconnected, the 'puter is (more or less) out of the equation, and the spark is under the control of the module in the distributor.

Try these suggestions, and post back!

I have a 96 Chevy Z71 4x4. I was having all sorts of weird electrical problems-no codes. Mine has 2 cables at the positive terminal at the battery-1 goes to the relays on the fenderwell, 1 to the starter. Check these for corrosion-mine were not making contact and did much the same as yours. Greg

Sounds like the pick up coil in the distributor.

Well, I replaced the pickup coil, the module and the ignition coil. I can read a hot at the coil but can't seem to find what is supposed to tell to fire. Kind of looks like the ECM. I checked the connections behind the instrument panel and they are good. I checked the dianostic codes and there wasn't any. I also put a new battery and cleaned the cables as well. I guess tomorrow I will start cutting into the wiring harness and trace wires. Any other ideas?????
