My son just purchased this old grader to use on his driveway. The guy that he purchased it from had been using it for his gravel driveway but did not need it any more. Has anyone used one of these and have any advice on how to get the most out of it on a gravel driveway? I wonder about how old that thing is. Thanks. I also posted this on the Implement Alley Board, so I am sorry for the repetition if you read both forums.

I have a Adams, they are noted for wheel side tilt features. As others have stated you need two operators. My mind usualy jumps to saftey.
Be very carefull, while the man stands on the grader running the lift wheels it is a good idea to lean yourself between the wheels as if you hit a obstruction or just plain gouge to deep on a small incline the grader will literaly jump sideways and throw you off the side faster than you can snap your fingers. If you are leaning forward between the lift wheels you can brace yourself a little better.

If you can unbolt the whole front end without destroying it you can bolt a hitch to it and hook it to a 3 point tractor hitch. If you wire the lift wheels you can control the cutting depth by raising or lowering the 3 point hitch on the tractor. If you do this it is a good idea to slot the holes in your tounge, or make it for a ball hitch so it does not bind up and bend your hitch if raised extreemly high. This was done to numerous ones in our area, and most of the front ends were thrown in the scrap iron pile.

Perhaps the biggest mistake when starting out is trying to cut to deep. They will do a pretty good job for you if used correctly.

They are made for pulling and a real test of driver skills trying to back one up in soft fill.

It has some features of an early 1900s Adams grader pulled by a traction engine, or Multi team horsedrawn. We own an Adams leaning wheel from about 1920 with solid rubber tires. Grade your road so that it is crowned in the center and rounded to the sides 6" on a 10ft road. do not dig dirt into the stones of the road, it makes mud. ABC roadbase with fines will provide a good foundation for a driveway from an aggrigate company. JimN

Well to use it well you will need 2 people BTDT and it takes practice also lots of it to do a good job. The person pulling it needs to know where he should keep it to do a good job also. Years ago we used one but have long since sold it since we have one with an engine, can be seen in the web page

We used to use one like this to grade the driveway where I used to work. They`ll do a great job, but you do have to have 2 people. One on the back, and one driving the tractor. The best thing you can do is grease everything well and have everything freed up nice on it. From there they`re pretty self explanitory. Good luck, I would love to find one for my driveway now.

I don't know how old it is, but when I was a kid back in the 60s, I used one a lot, the local Township let anyone use the one like this since they had more modern stuff then. You need a person standing on the grader to control depth, and other adjustments, and it will stop a Farmall M, if you let it dig. They did a good job, if you took the time to use it correctly. I wouldn't mind having one myself, but have not found one yet, and no need for one, just want one.
