Have any of you guys painted tractors or implements outdoors? I was thinking of making a portable greenhouse like structure out of panels made with 2x2"'s and covered with plastic and screen for ventilation. I would have provisions for a fan for circulation if there was no wind. Have any of you done anything like this? I definitely don't want to do this in the attached garage.

I have used a framed conduit type tent for several years as an outside paint booth.Recently bought a prefab canopy with painting in mind. Will close off the ends and sides with clear plastic and lay plastic on the floor. JUST WAITING FOR WARMER WEATHER!

I have done a lot of painting outside also. I spray the ground with water around where I am going to paint. It never fails as soon as I start to paint the wind comes up. I have painted several cars also, to get a better job I back the truck out of the garage spray the floor with water and go at it. Stan

As soon as it warms up , I'm painting one outside. Direct sunlight is not good when painting outside, a cloudy day is best.Inside is best but outside sure saves a big mess. I had the inside closed off with plastic and the overspray some way got to the other side of the building.Everything had a red mist on it. mess!!

I'd say if you're starting a restoration with many parts to paint but don't have the time or patience to wait for calm days, it would be a great idea.

I just painted these 2 rims a couple of days ago in 34 degree weather in the driveway and then wheeled them back in the garage to dry. It worked and I received no complaints from the management.

I painted a couple of cars outside in the past with good results. I do recall I got some fisheyes on a fender once and figured out it was because the temps were in the 90's that day and I was sweating and my sweat dripped on the fender. Had to do that one over again, but wore a headband the next time. Here are some pics of my EW grain trailer I painted last year and it was all done outside too. I had to brush paint the wood sides first as they were really dry. In the pics it's up on a set of car ramps as I had to slide under to paint all the running gear frame work and I needed room for my jelly belly. That was the first time I recall spray painting upside down and yes I was almost as blue as the trailer when I got done. third party image

And this picture was taken a few weeks later after I put the upper boards back on.

My father painted more tractors, cars, trucks etc than I have hair ,outside. Ya really have to watch the wind, pollinating trees and such, and bugs, and of course temp and humidity. They always turned out great, of course my Pa can make anything from anything, unlike me.

Dunno John,

Just as soon as I get a "warmish" day and no wind, I'm paintin' this cab that's setting outside. Gotta be fairly warm tho.

just pick a right day, don't screw around with no stupid platic tent crap, just pick the right day like Gary says and just bang it! Think about it, you'd be spending longer periods of time to put up a stupid tent than you would just painting the thing already.

If I'm gonna go through the effort of painting something, I darn sure don't want a bunch of flies, skeeters and cat hair stuck to it. I also want some protection from rain if it comes up. I want to do a nice paint job, not necessarily dupont imron and 3 layers of clearcoat, but nice finish all the same.

Send me an e-mail and I'll send you some pictures of something you can build for painting in. Takes less then 30 minutes to put up and cost less then $50 to build plus you can put it up and take it back down and move it all over the place
