Hey all, I was just curious as to the "from then to now" growth( or reduction) in your farming, and over how may years it was. Such as " started in '85 with 2 tractor,40 acres, 2 goats and an ugly sheep- now 9 tractors, 1000 acres, no goats, and 100 ugly sheep"

As for me started in '04 with 2 tractors, a 15,000 chicken breeder barn, only 23 acres tillable owning 40. Hoping to aquire 200 acres in the next two years. This spring will be my first cropping start, other than the sweetcorn.

How have the redt of ya progressed since your venture in farming?

Started when I was 7(1983) with one registered holstein heifer calf gifted from great grandma. Worked on family farm until I graduated high school. then sold my 26 fancy registed cow herd and paid for college. After college started buying heifer calves, rented farm to keep them bought feed, and paid to have manure hauled away. While I worked for local tractor dealership. In August 2000 started shipping milk on rented farm with 30 "mutt cows". In April 2004 farm moved 50 cow plus youngstcok herd to western NY, bought my father inlaws farm and started my own farm machinery repair business on the side.

Start in 1997 with 24 acres; 6 in hay and 18 in corn (someone elses). Had house built in 1998, reduce to 6 acres hay and 14 acres corn (again someone elses). 2000 built chicken coop and added 100 chickens, Fall 2000 head-on collision and disable for half a year. Summer of 2001 added 10 ewes and 1 ram (still no barn).
2002 added 50 turkeys and started converting all row crop land to hay. 2003 refinanced to buy pole barn with equity from house. By 2005 grew to 34 ewes, 150 chickens and 75 turkeys. August 2005, heart stopped working. Family dispursed all livestock but 5 shetland ewes. Recovered in 2006 and started over. 2005, purchase hay equipement, so don't have to rely on nieghbor to finish his first. Now have 3 turkeys, 7 hens, 14 ewes with lambs coming next month.

2007 is going to be a very good year! Wife wants to get a few pigs to breed!

This farm started 35 yrs ago with 2 Shorthorn heifers on 17 acres. The herd has grown to 155 head twice over the years. The farm owns about 200 acres rents 400 more. Crops are principally alfalfa hay, grass hay first cut off pastures, and corn for livestock feed. We take pride in our registered Shorthorn breeding stock. Reputation’s such we’ve sold starter herds sight on seen to farmers in and out of state. And furnished club calves for 4H projects for years. Age creeping up on we’ve added a few more 1850 Oliver’s to the mechanized line up. Less chance dropping a heavy implement tongue on an old man’s feet to slow to get out of the way. Going to hang in here as long as our days and/or years last. Can’t imagine going to bed without looking forward the next day’s surprises, challenges, adventures and the many bovine lives in our caring hands.

2 years into my "hobby farm"

33 acres total. 22 corn/soybeans.
11 acres tree farm and house.

Ford 2600, Ford 3930, AC 7000 and my great grandpas 1948 AC WC.

Amazing how my great grandpa covered 80 acres and that was his one and only tractor.

Every minute "in the field" is great, not matter how bad it goes.

Rick

Rented 80 acres of hay ground when I was 16 (8 years ago) farmed that untill I bought my farm (400 acres) 3 years ago. Have added more rented ground. Now farm 750 acres of hay, plus a little corn and pasture for about 1000 acres of irrigated ground total, plus dryland pasture. Also running a 225 head cow/calf operation. With the number of retiring farmers in the area I could farm a bunch more land, but don"t have the time, man power, equipment, or desire to do so.

40 rented acres of corn in 74 as a junior in high school.

Been growing in size slowly over the years,

Bought 80 acres in 82.

Had to take a full time job in 86, close to going broke farming.

After 3 of the 4 daughters were thru college in 2000 I quit the job.

Dad died in 99 and I bought 50 acres from mom with the buildings and her half of the 70 cows.

Farming 900 acres of corn and beans now and 300 of oats, hay and pasture.

Some of the acres are custom farmed, some rented and some owned.

Bought 100 acres a month ago. Hope corn stays at $3.00.

Gary

I'm going to be accused of Sarcatiscisam now==Started in 1960, A "B"Farmall and a "CC" Case,80 Acres of rented Hills and clay.Progressed to 1970, 280 Acres of fair rented ground,30 Head of Holstiens in Milk, An AC190-ACD17-2-ACWD45-MM R-Corn Blight wiped out our feed, Dry weather ruined the hay Crop, sold out spring of 1971-Got Union Carpenter Card and went to work , Retired from Carpenters Union November 1999, Moved to Arizona into a House we owe not a cent on and Collect a Carpenters Pension and Social Security. But you want to know something? I still miss the Farm after all these years of not having one.Good luck to any one able to make ends meet by Farming. You have more endurance than I or you have deeper Pockets.John
